New Jersey 5s

The New Jersey 5s, often simply called The 5s, is a premier professional pickleball team competing in Major League Pickleball (MLP). Founded by Gary Vaynerchuk and Ryan Harwood, the team has quickly gained prominence for its competitive spirit, stellar roster, and consistent performances in the league. Known for their dynamic play and resilience, the New Jersey 5s continue to be a powerhouse within the Premier Division of MLP, earning numerous accolades and maintaining a passionate fan base.

History

The New Jersey 5s were established in 2022 by entrepreneur and sports enthusiast Gary Vaynerchuk, a New Jersey native, in partnership with Ryan Harwood, a former Division 1 college tennis player turned pickleball advocate. Their shared vision was to build a team that would not only excel on the court but also help fuel the sport’s rapid growth and popularity.

Since their inception, the New Jersey 5s have risen through the ranks of Major League Pickleball to become one of the most formidable teams in the Premier level. In 2024, they topped the regular season standings and consistently demonstrated their competitive edge throughout the season. Their crowning achievement came at the 2025 MLP Mid-Season Tournament in Grand Rapids, where they entered as the only undefeated team at the Premier level and emerged victorious by defeating the D.C. Pickleball Team in a thrilling final. This victory secured them $80,000 in prize money and strengthened their status as league leaders.

Remarkably, the New Jersey 5s have exhibited exceptional clutch performance, with most of their matches decided in the DreamBreaker tiebreaker format, underscoring their mental toughness and strategic prowess in close contests. Their success has been built on a foundation of strong team chemistry, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment to excellence, solidifying their reputation as a top-tier MLP franchise.

The 2025 roster of the New Jersey 5s features a balanced mix of experienced professionals and rising stars, reflecting the team’s commitment to excellence across all match formats, including women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and DreamBreaker tiebreakers:

• Anna Leigh Waters – One of the sport’s most celebrated and youngest talents, Waters is known for her aggressive baseline play, quick reflexes, and unparalleled competitive drive. She has played a pivotal role in many of the 5s’ victories this season.

• Zane Navratil – A highly skilled player with a versatile game and a strong record in both singles and doubles formats, Navratil’s consistency and court vision make him a key asset.

• Mari Humberg – Known for her powerful shots and tactical acumen, Humberg contributes significantly to the team’s women’s doubles and mixed doubles success.

• Will Howells – Nicknamed “The Wolf,” Howells is recognized for his aggressive style and dominance in multiple event formats. He notably achieved the APP triple crown, highlighting his all-around skill.

• Meghan Dizon – A strategically minded female player renowned for her clever positioning and steady performance.
