Ryan McDonagh is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL. Drafted 12th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007, he developed at the University of Wisconsin before becoming a cornerstone of the New York Rangers, where he served as captain from 2014. Traded to Tampa Bay in 2018, McDonagh won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021 and surpassed 1,000 NHL regular-season games in March 2025.
