This weekend marks the 103rd Oregon Trail Days, a statement to the enduring spirit of a town that honors its history with a rich tapestry of events. Amid the parades, art shows, and food fairs, one event stands out, capturing the hearts and paddles of many: the Pickleball Tournament.

Honoring Tradition

The Oregon Trail Days Celebration is more than just a gathering; it’s a journey back in time. It began this morning with the Don Childs Memorial 5K Run, setting the pace for a weekend filled with nostalgia and community spirit. “This is the 103rd year of the Oregon Trail Celebration. It’s a big deal in Gering,” said Crystal Sandberg, a lifelong resident. “We’ve got lots of fun things going on. This morning we had the Kiddie Parade, which is one of my personal favorites.”

Sandberg stood in front of the Civic Center, where the Vera Dulaney Memorial Art Show & Sale that started at 9 a.m., a cornerstone of the celebration, was in full swing. This art show, along with the Kiddie Parade and games in Legion Park, forms the bedrock of the weekend’s activities.

Embracing Modernity with Pickleball

Amid these longstanding traditions, a newer activity has emerged, drawing participants of all ages: pickleball. As the fastest-growing sport in America, it’s only fitting that pickleball finds its place in this historic celebration. Sunday’s Pickleball Tournament at the Oregon Trail Park Pickleball Courts is set to be a highlight, blending the old with the new in a celebration of athleticism and community.

Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has seen a surge in popularity across the country. Its appeal lies in its accessibility—suitable for all ages and skill levels. The Gering community has embraced this modern pastime with open arms, integrating it into the fabric of their traditional celebration.
