Jack Christy, Jr., owner of the Christy’s of Indiana auction house, is confident about the auction’s success. He remarked that the auction is expected to be highly successful, noting the current popularity of pickleball. Christy stated that pickleball is “really hot” right now, making the auction a highly anticipated event.
“I think this is going to be a good auction. I just think it’s such a hot ticket right now, Pickleball is just really hot.”

Inventory on Display
Spread across 7,000 square feet of storage space at Christy’s of Indiana, there’s a treasure trove of pickleball gear: hats, shirts, balls, nets, promotional magnets, and license plate frames, plus an impressive array of paddles. The carbon fiber paddles alone number 3,200, mostly bundled in lots of four. “We’re trying to get our lots down to where somebody that’s an end user or somebody that plays pickleball would be able to buy it,” explained Christy.
This auction isn’t just about clearing out stock; it’s about recouping funds for victims of a far-reaching pickleball investment scam. Rodney Grubbs, the face behind Pickleball Rocks, had been a familiar figure at tournaments, selling gear and soliciting investments with promises of lucrative returns.
Legal Battles and Bankruptcy
In February, a determined group of investors convinced a federal judge to force Grubbs into bankruptcy. This legal move compelled Grubbs to list his investors and the debts he owed, which totaled roughly $47 million. Matthew Foster, an attorney representing over 300 investors, has been meticulously examining Grubbs’ financial records. Despite extensive efforts, Foster has found no hidden assets. “It looks like (Grubbs) may well have spent everything. I’m not confident that we’ll find a pot of gold here,” Foster lamented.
Uncovering the Scheme
Evidence suggests that Grubbs was using new investments to pay off older debts, a classic Ponzi scheme maneuver. Recent records show that Grubbs disbursed hundreds of thousands of dollars to those he owed money. The remaining assets, including the pickleball business and properties in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, are being questioned by the bankruptcy trustee. However, Foster is not hopeful. “My sense is that they’ve pretty much identified what they think they can liquidate,” he stated. The projected sale of assets is expected to generate only about $2 million, a small fraction of the $47 million owed to investors.
