USA Pickleball Select Series to Kick Off in Fairfield

USA Pickleball Select Series: Allan Witt Park is preparing to host a landmark event in the world of pickleball, as the USA Pickleball Select Series: Wine Country makes its debut from September 6-8. This new addition to the pickleball calendar promises an engaging competition for players of all skill levels in singles and doubles formats.

A National Series with Local Impact

The Wine Country event is one of five select tournaments sanctioned by USA Pickleball running from June through October. This series aims to foster growth in the sport with stops in diverse locations including Richmond, Virginia; Foley, Alabama; Manasquan, New Jersey; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. George Kennedy, a Fairfield resident and regional director for USA Pickleball, reflects on the significance of the event,

“It’s brand new, so we will see how it goes. Having the USA Pickleball sponsorship to it adds some cache.” – (Kennedy)

Registration Details and Tournament Structure

Registration for the event is open until August 30, with a fee of $45 plus an additional $10 per event. All participants must hold a USA Pickleball membership. The tournament guarantees each player a minimum of three games and allows for sign-ups at usapickleball.org.

The competition will feature a round-robin format across various divisions, including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. These divisions are tailored for entry-level players and newcomers.

A Boost for Fairfield and the Local Pickleball Community

The tournament’s introduction coincides with a period of growth for pickleball in Fairfield. The local Fairfield Pickleball Club, boasting over 100 members, has benefited from significant facility upgrades. The city’s council approved enhancements to Allan Witt Park, including additional courts, in late June.

“This tournament is one step below winning divisions that automatically get you qualified for nationals. It’s a chance to get ready for other bigger tournaments with referees.” – (Kennedy)

From Racquetball to Pickleball

Kennedy’s journey into pickleball began during the COVID-19 pandemic when traditional sports like racquetball were unavailable. He, along with a group of friends, turned to pickleball and found it to be a fulfilling alternative.

The Appeal of Pickleball

For those unfamiliar, pickleball is rapidly gaining traction as America’s fastest-growing sport. Combining elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis, it is played with a smaller paddle and a perforated plastic ball. High winds can present challenges for players, making precision crucial. Kennedy is also promoting the event’s Wine Country aspect, inviting participants to extend their stay and explore the renowned local wine region.

Event Location

The Wine Country tournament will be held at Allan Witt Park, located at 1741 West Texas Street. The facility boasts 16 courts, providing ample space for the anticipated competitive play.
