Pickleball Connects Lockport for a Noble Cause: Pickleball’s Power

Pickleball Connects Lockport for a Noble Cause: The community of Lockport came together in remarkable fashion two weekends ago, showing its support for a noble cause while simultaneously celebrating the life of a young man whose spirit remains an inspiration.

A Meaningful Event

The Roman Foundation successfully hosted a pickleball tournament at the Lockport Recreation Center, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators. This event not only raised awareness for the foundation’s mission but also honored the memory of Roman Robichaux, a local teenager who tragically passed away in 2022 at just 15 years old.

The foundation is dedicated to recognizing outstanding students in local middle schools and high schools, as well as church parishes, by establishing an endowed award in Roman’s honor—a testament to the virtues he embodied.

“After recognizing the growing pickleball community in the Lafourche area, we wanted to bring the people together for a cause they can unite with,” said Simone Robichaux, Roman’s mother and an advocate for the foundation.

“This was our second pickleball tournament this year, and we intend to host our third tournament in January. We had 50 teams registered for the tournament. We were blessed amidst the chaos of Hurricane Francine to have so much success.” – (Simone Robichaux)

Remembering Roman

Though Roman may no longer be physically present, his legacy shines through in the hearts of those who loved him. Simone expressed her belief that Roman was watching over the event, smiling at the outpouring of support and the continued impact of his memory.

Roman was passionate about competition and the camaraderie of team sports, participating in youth sports in the area as well as at Vandebilt Catholic. Those who knew him recall him as a great teammate, driven by a competitive spirit but equally invested in building relationships with his peers.

A Legacy of Virtue

Beyond sports, Roman was a devout Christian, maintaining a close relationship with God. His kindness and empathy left a lasting impression on those around him, with many remembering his sensitivity to the feelings of others. Roman was known for never speaking ill of anyone and making a positive impact wherever he went.

Through the efforts of The Roman Foundation, his legacy is poised to inspire future generations.

“This award will provide invaluable support to deserving students pursuing their educational goals. The Roman Robichaux Virtue Award was created to commend students who lead virtuous lives, demonstrate exceptional moral character, and embody the principles upheld by our faith. This scholarship program serves as a testament to the strong commitment of the Robichaux family toward fostering the growth and development of our youth within our community.” – (Simone Robichaux)
