Annual Pickleball Tournament in Hawaii Promises Fun and Community Spirit

Annual Pickleball Tournament in Hawaii: HUGS (Help, Understanding & Group Support) is a cherished local non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting families across Hawaii who are going through the challenges of having a seriously ill child. Established in 1982 by a dedicated group of volunteers at Unity Church, HUGS focuses on strengthening the Hawaii’s families by offering emotional and financial support to all members of the family unit.

A Mission of Support

“Our mission is to ensure that families don’t face their journey alone,” shared Alex, a representative of HUGS. The organization serves children from birth to 21 years old diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses, including a range of conditions from cancer and cardiac issues to liver and kidney ailments, as well as chromosomal defects. Importantly, all programs and services provided by HUGS come at no charge to the families they serve.

The 2nd Annual Paddle for HUGS Pickleball Tournament

The Paddle for HUGS Pickleball Tournament is scheduled for November 2nd at Kamilo’iki Community Park, running from 8 AM to 5 PM. This marks the second year of this significant event, which features a round-robin mixed-doubles format divided into beginner and intermediate divisions. Players will enjoy the unique experience of partnering with different players in each round, promoting a spirit of pickleball community and camaraderie.

A special highlight of the pickleball tournament will be a halftime show featuring a HUGS family, who will share their personal experiences and the profound impact HUGS has had on their lives, offering valuable insight into the organization’s essential work.

Getting Involved

Keven Wong, a passionate supporter of HUGS, expressed his motivation for participating in the tournament.

“I got involved with the Paddle for HUGS Tournament because I believe in the mission of HUGS and wanted to use the sport I love to make a positive impact on families facing challenging times.” – (Keven)

How to Sign Up

Players interested in joining the tournament can register by visiting hugshawaii.org by October 25th. The entry fee is $75, with all proceeds directly benefiting HUGS and the families they support. Participants are encouraged to don pink attire to show solidarity with the cause.
