Megan Fudge’s Winning Weekend in Pickleball: Pushing Boundaries

Megan Fudge’s Winning Weekend in Pickleball: Megan Fudge reflects on a weekend filled with unique challenges as she shows the complexities of the split-age event and APP women’s doubles. Competing in this pickleball event felt different due to unexpected pairings and opponents, a result of injuries and the demanding schedule that professional players face. Some athletes chose not to participate because of the busy season, leading to last-minute changes in the lineup. Despite these problems, Fudge supported the experience, showing the unpredictable nature of the event and the strength needed in the sport.

Embracing New Roles

Fudge’s preparation for this weekend was anything but conventional. She texted her partner Jill Braverman midweek with a important adjustment:

“I wanted to play on the right side.”-(fudge)

This decision, coming from a desire to challenge herself, showcased her partner’s versatility.

“One of the many reasons I love playing with Jill is her flexibility. She can play either side, which allows me to continue working on different aspects of my game.”-(fudge)

Having primarily played on the left side—especially in mixed doubles with left-handed Jack Munro—Fudge recognized the need for growth. After consultations with her coach and fellow player Ryler, she realized that evolution was essential.

“I decided to take on the right side for this event.”-(fudge)

Learning and Competing

Switching to the right side has forced Fudge to rethink her strategies on the court.

“The right side requires me to think differently—attacking, resetting, and setting up the point all feel unique compared to the left.”-(fudge)

She explains every movement, from her positioning to the angles she employs for her attacks, has presented new challenges.

“It’s been a learning process, but I really enjoy the challenge. I feel like the day I stop working on my game will be the day I step away from competing.”-(fudge)

Fudge’s weekend was not limited to just doubles. On Saturday, she leapt into the split age event, stepping in for Simone, who had to withdraw due to injury. Teaming up with Angela Simon, who’s a formidable ball striker, Fudge went with the flow.

“We had to make some adjustments, but we had fun and shared some laughs on the court.”-(fudge)

The split age event, characterized by its competitive spirit and unique partnerships, provided the perfect platform for her adaptability.

Right Side “Beast Mode”

When it came time for women’s doubles, Fudge was eager to showcase her newfound skills.

“It was time for me to show off my right side ‘beast mode.'”-(fudge)

Observing the evolution of the game through players like Gabe Tardio and Big H, she noted a shift towards dominance from right-side players. While she acknowledged she wasn’t at their level yet, her commitment to improvement was evident.

“I’ve studied a lot of tape and worked on what I can bring to the right side.”-(fudge)

Her efforts paid off, as she and Jill claimed another gold medal together.

“This is our second medal this year, and we’ve kept our 100% medal streak going when we team up.”-(fudge)

Looking Ahead

With the excitement of victory still fresh, Fudge faces a quick change.

“I’m flying to Dallas on Wednesday morning for the APP,”

She shares, enthusiasm evident in her voice. Staying with her great aunt Helen adds a personal touch to the competitive experience, as she prepares for another weekend of challenges.

“Time to keep pushing forward and see what’s next.!”-(fudge)
