Antigo’s Pickleball Courts: In a vibrant community push to embrace the growing sport of pickleball, 16 brand-new courts have opened at Jaycee Park, transforming what were once tennis courts. Langlade Pickleball Club Board Member Eric Fuller shared the enthusiasm but also highlighted the financial hurdles that remain. Despite the excitement, the project has not yet reached its financial goal.

The board is proactive in seeking funds to bridge this gap, employing a variety of fundraising strategies. Private donations through a GoFund Me campaign and public grants have played a crucial role in reaching the initial budget. However, they are looking for further support to ensure the project’s long-term viability.

One creative initiative allows individuals to pay $10,000 to name a court after themselves, provided they have a good public reputation. This unique offering adds a personal touch to the facility, further engaging the community in its development.

A Unique Playing Experience

What sets these pickleball courts apart are the permanent fences separating each one and the overhead lights, allowing for play even after the sun sets. The accessibility and design cater to all ages, making it an inviting space for families and friends to come together and enjoy the sport.

Growing Interest in Pickleball

Fuller noted a remarkable increase in interest within the community. “Five years ago, we maybe had 15 people; now we have over a hundred people playing, and it’s going to continue to grow from there now that we have the facility,” he said, showing the court’s role in the sport’s expansion in Antigo.

Currently, court access is by appointment only, shared with Antigo Middle School. However, the board envisions a grand opening tournament in June that will signal the beginning of a new era for pickleball in the area.

Looking Ahead

As they look to the future, Fuller has high hopes for the facility’s expansion.

“I hope in a year or two we can find enough funding for Phase 2 of our plan, which is to open a year-round indoor pickleball facility somewhere in Antigo.” – (fuller)

The courts have already been generously donated to the Antigo School District, paving the way for an exciting future for local pickleball players.
