Indoor Pickleball Courts Revolutionize Charleston: Charleston is breathing new life into an old space by transforming a former Walmart into an indoor pickleball facility, along with self-storage units. This project is part of a broader plan to revive the West Park Plaza area, bringing recreation and economic opportunities to the community.

Pickleball Takes Center Stage

During Tuesday’s city council meeting, Charleston officials approved a proposal from Spring Property Management LLC to convert the long-vacant Walmart building into a multi-use facility.

The plan includes temperature-controlled self-storage units and, most notably, an indoor pickleball facility that will feature multiple pickleball courts, along with concessions and seating areas. The council voted in favor of the proposal, 5-0.

Mayor Brandon Combs voiced his enthusiasm for the project.

“It’s a great project, it’s something that we’ve been looking at, talking about for a while. I’m extremely happy with this and I look forward to the future and what it ends up looking like out there.” – (Brandon Combs)

Pickleball as a Community Asset

The pickleball facility, to be located at 510 W Lincoln Ave., will serve as a new recreational hub for Charleston residents, with pickleball at its core. Council member Tim Newell noted that the project will improve traffic flow, enhance parking, and update the overall aesthetics of the West Park Plaza properties, making the area more accessible and appealing to visitors.

Zach Leonard, owner of Spring Property, outlined the vision for the development, which will not only cater to pickleball players but also offer space for additional recreational activities. Alongside the pickleball courts, a food court and other commercial or recreational additions are planned, giving the area a fresh start.

Economic Boost and Job Creation

The plan has garnered widespread support. On March 14, the City of Charleston Board of Zoning, Appeals & Planning voted 6-0 in favor of recommending the project’s approval. Following this, the city council unanimously approved the concept plan on April 2, citing the long-term benefits for the community, both recreationally and economically.

The former Walmart site has been vacant for over two decades, and its redevelopment promises to generate construction jobs and permanent positions once the facility opens. The indoor pickleball space is expected to be a key attraction, drawing players from across the region and making Charleston a new destination for the sport.

A New Home for Pickleball

The indoor pickleball facility will occupy 7,800 square feet of space, allowing for multiple courts and room for other recreational uses. The redesign also calls for the exterior of the property to be upgraded, along with improvements to the parking lot, creating a more inviting environment for residents and visitors.

This revitalization of the West Park Plaza area aligns with Charleston’s broader goal of increasing recreational opportunities while boosting the local economy.
