A Vision for MLP Team Colors: From Dull to Dazzling

A Vision for MLP Team Colors:  Concerns have been raised regarding the pickleball uniform choices among teams in Major League Pickleball (MLP). Observers have dedicated considerable time to analyzing MLP’s Premier and Challenger merchandise and evaluating the overall aesthetics of each team’s apparel, leading to a clear conclusion: MLP teams need to enhance their pickleball uniforms.

The Pickleball Uniform Dilemma

With 22 teams competing in Major League Pickleball, one would expect a vibrant display of colors and designs on the court. However, many teams appear remarkably similar when it comes to their pickleball uniforms.

During the recent  MLP Las Vegas event at the Darling Tennis Center, viewers tuning into PickleballTV faced challenges in identifying the competing teams. Aside from Anna Leigh Waters, who stood out in her bright red, white, and blue skirt, and the Orlando Squeeze, easily recognizable in their signature bright orange, many fans struggled to determine which squad was on the court. Such lack of distinctiveness raises concerns for both spectators and followers of the league.

Confusing Color Choices

Each team frequently cycles through new uniforms featuring a variety of colors, which can lead to confusion among viewers. For instance, the Columbus Sliders may shift from a series of white and blue looks to a striking red, creating abrupt changes that leave fans disoriented.

When teams like the Columbus Sliders, New Jersey 5s, and St. Louis Shock all appear in red and white pickleball uniforms at the same event, differentiating them becomes increasingly difficult. Small logos only add to the challenge of telling teams apart.

Although orange can be a tricky color to work with, the Orlando Squeeze’s distinctive hue is commendable. Additionally, the Las Vegas Night Owls have taken an innovative approach with their hot pink dip-dye uniforms, ensuring they capture attention on the court.

A Call for Creativity and Consistency

While teams may feel limited in their color options, creativity and commitment to specific color schemes are essential. For example, the Florida Smash has embraced their emerald green; they should fully commit to that color. A monochromatic green look or a combination of green tops with black bottoms could enhance their visual identity, making them instantly recognizable.

Moreover, teams like the St. Louis Shock, Dallas Flash, and New Jersey 5s frequently sport blue and white pickleball uniforms. When these teams face each other, confusion can become overwhelming. Adopting a two-color system, similar to practices in the NFL, with combinations like burgundy and gold, black and lilac, or navy blue and white, could provide a more vivid representation of the cities that each team represents.

A Vision for Vibrant Pickleball

The current assortment of uniforms is criticized for being overly homogenous. Whether it’s the Frisco Pandas, SoCal Hard Eights, Brooklyn Aces, or Atlanta Bouncers, teams that often use black and white pickleball uniforms make it difficult for fans to follow the action. In instances where two such teams compete against one another in all-black attire, confusion abounds.

There is a strong call for Major League Pickleball to embrace a bolder approach to team colors. Bright, fun colors that reflect the joy of pickleball should dominate the courts. Establishing distinctive team identities through vibrant uniforms will enhance the viewing experience for fans and players alike.

News in Brief: A Vision for MLP Team Colors

Concerns about uniform choices in Major League Pickleball highlight a lack of distinctiveness among teams, making it difficult for fans to identify players during matches. The need for vibrant, creative uniforms is emphasized, with suggestions for consistent color schemes and two-color combinations that better represent each team’s identity. The piece advocates for a more engaging aesthetic that reflects the excitement of pickleball, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
