Pickleball Unites Lewiston: The Marvelous Role of Pickleball in Community Healing

Pickleball Unites Lewiston: Nearly one year after the mass shooting that claimed 18 lives, the Lewiston community is coming together like never before. In a world that often feels fractured, the simple act of playing pickleball has become a powerful reminder of unity and resilience. This week, local pickleball players gathered to celebrate the end of their outdoor season, and their event—the Lewiston/Auburn Pickleball Bash—was filled with a spirit of hope, joy, and connection amidst the prevailing grief.

As October draws to a close, a somber atmosphere covers Lewiston. Yet, at Lewiston High School, the sound of laughter and cheers broke through the heaviness of the moment. Over 50 pickleball players united on the courts, sharing not only a love for the game but also a commitment to support one another in challenging times.

“Anything that we can do, that we could do together, it just happens to be pickleball but whatever we do to bring the community together, I think helps.” – (Stephen MacLean)

Stephen MacLean, a leader in the pickleball community, expressed the sentiment that “anything that we can do together… helps.” His words reflect the shared understanding that activities like pickleball can serve as vital lifelines, fostering community spirit and personal well-being.

“I mean everybody just having a good time. You hear a lot of laughs and giggles and jabs and everything, so you know pickle balls can be a competitive activity, but it can also be very fun.” – (Stephen MacLean)

The Role of Pickleball in Community Healing

The Lewiston /Auburn Pickleball League boasts over 700 registered members, each of whom contributes to the camaraderie that defines this community. Kyle Miller, a passionate participant, shared his perspective, stating,

“It’s great, it’s all the things that we need more of in the world. Community, socialization, of course exercise outside, all around, it keeps you young.” – (Kyle Miller)

These sentiments resonate deeply, especially as the community grapples with the aftermath of last year’s tragedy. Pickleball isn’t just a game for these individuals; it’s a source of joy, a way to stay active, and a venue for forming meaningful connections.

“Coming together as a group is important and also communicating if you do need help or you’re struggling.” – (Kyle Miller)

For many in the group, the events of last October remain. Stephen MacLean noted that everyone has been affected in some way, showing the importance of being there for one another.

“We hold the families and victims in our hearts and we all grief. You know, it’s a community loss and I think just coming together and continuing to do what we do helps to bring us together and keep us together.” – (Stephen MacLean)

The shared experience of loss has only strengthened their resolve to come together, showing how pickleball can be a vehicle for healing and support. Through laughter and friendly competition, participants are reminded that they are not alone, fostering a sense of hope that extends beyond the courts.
