Carolina Pickleball Company Aiming New Courts: In the vibrant landscape of Brunswick County, pickleball enthusiasts may soon have reason to celebrate. Plans are in progress for a new pickleball facility in Shallotte, lead by the Carolina Pickleball Company.
This initiative aims to transform a 2.78-acre site at 5183 Washington Road into a hub for outdoor recreation, featuring six state-of-the-art pickleball courts alongside an indoor recreational center. The proposal depend on a zoning request that would shift the site from rural, spread out residential to low-density commercial, aligning with Brunswick County’s vision for community development.
The company seeks a rezoning from rural, low-density residential to low-density commercial, aligning with the county’s land use plan. Located near a boat repair shop and residences, the site aims to cater to pickleball enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
Owned by Jennifer Darrow, The Carolina Pickleball Company has a track record of hosting leagues and events, including youth camps, highlighting its commitment to community engagement. While details about the facility were not disclosed to Port City Daily, the site’s total area spans 121,000 square feet with a parking requirement of 19 spaces.
Pickleball, a sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has surged in popularity across the U.S., experiencing an impressive 87.5% year-over-year growth according to the SFIA’s 2023 report. Should the rezoning be approved, this facility would become the second dedicated indoor pickleball venue in Brunswick County, following The House of Pickleball’s establishment in Leland.
If the rezoning is approved, it would mark the second indoor pickleball facility in Brunswick County, following the inception of The House of Pickleball in 2018 at 115 Kay Todd Road, Leland. This venue pioneered the sport in New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties and recently expanded its cushioned courts to twelve in 2023.
A rezoning request is scheduled for two parcels spanning 3.83 acres of land near 131 Green Swamp Road in Supply, submitted by David Summerlin, a real estate broker for Sun Coast Partners, and South Brunswick Development. The proposal seeks to change the zoning classification from rural, low density residential to low density commercial.
The application acknowledges potential impacts from an upcoming interchange plan at the Highway 17 and Highway 211 junction, although these changes won’t directly affect the subject property. The aim is proactive zoning alignment with future needs, supporting a mixed-use development that conforms to the county’s long-term land use plan.
