Current Setup and Challenges
One of the primary concerns raised by resident Cathy Albright, a frequent user of the pickleball facilities, was the need for an additional door in the fencing surrounding the courts. This suggestion arose from worries about safety, highlighting the importance of having multiple access points in case of emergencies.
Currently, the fenced-in area houses two tennis courts alongside four pickleball courts, with only one entrance located near the tennis section. This setup, as noted by Albright and supported by other community members, could potentially pose challenges during emergencies or incidents involving unleashed pets.
Proposals and Council Response
John Schick, vice president of the council, acknowledged these concerns, particularly emphasizing noise as a significant issue. He proposed exploring the installation of sound barrier cloth along the fencing, estimating a cost of approximately $7,000. “We need to appease the taxpayers,” remarked Schick, showing the council’s commitment to addressing community feedback and ensuring a favorable environment for all park users.
Further reinforcing the safety discourse, Zan Hummel, another resident and advocate for pickleball court safety, reiterated the importance of having adequate exits. Hummel expressed apprehension that the current layout could lead to potential entrapment scenarios during emergencies, citing incidents involving off-leash dogs as additional safety hazards.
In response to these concerns, the council agreed to evaluate the existing setup and explore potential solutions to improve safety measures at the park.
