Pickleball Courts Reduction in Bonnerworth Park’s New Design

Pickleball Courts Reduction in Bonnerworth Park: Peterborough’s $4.4 million Bonnerworth Park redevelopment is moving forward with a revised draft plan, which will be presented to the city’s arenas, parks, and recreation advisory committee and the accessibility advisory committee on Tuesday, August 13. The updated plan includes adjustments to the number of pickleball courts, parking spaces, and greenspace, reflecting a new vision for the park.

Changes to Pickleball Courts

The new draft reduces the number of pickleball courts from 16 to 14, including two accessible courts. The courts will be relocated further west and will be surrounded by acoustic sound barriers on the east, west, and south sides to address noise concerns.

Parking and Accessibility Adjustments

The plan now features a single parking lot situated at the intersection of Bonnaccord Street and Monaghan Road. This new lot will accommodate 44 parking spots and include bike rings on a concrete base. The parking lot orientation has shifted from the previous east-west direction to a north-south alignment.

New Greenspace and Recreational Features

A new open lawn area, measuring 32 by 53 meters (105 by 174 feet), has been added east of the pickleball courts. This space was not part of the original facility fit plan and will provide additional green space for park visitors.

The pump track, initially planned for north of the Bonnaccord Street parking lot, has been relocated to McDonnel Street, where a second parking lot was previously situated. This change introduces grassy areas between the bike paths of the pump track.

Additional Park Enhancements

The revised plan includes a 312-square-meter plaza situated between the two accessible pickleball courts, equipped with two spectator benches. The skatepark expansion remains as previously planned, to the east of the existing skatepark.

The shade shelter will now be located north of the new open lawn area, rather than south of the existing skatepark. A landscaped berm, featuring a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, will be planted south of the parking lot, pickleball courts, and open lawn area, extending along Monaghan Road and part of McDonnel Street.

Finalization and Public Viewing

The updated draft plan will be reviewed and discussed during the 5:30 p.m. advisory committee meeting, which will be livestreamed at peterborough.ca/livestreams. This will provide an opportunity for the public to observe and stay informed about the latest updates on the Bonnerworth Park redevelopment.
