New Pickleball Court Opens in Timmins: Game Changer

New Pickleball Court Opens in Timmins: For the first time, pickleball enthusiasts in Timmins have a space to call their own. On Monday morning, city officials proudly opened a dedicated outdoor pickleball court, answering a call that has grown louder as the sport’s popularity skyrockets. The introduction of this court marks a significant step forward for the local pickleball community, which has long shared playing space with tennis players.

Competitive player Luke Cloutier expressed his satisfaction,

“It’s nice to have these facilities now. I think we’re really going to need to appreciate it and enjoy the courts. We just need the weather to cooperate, now.”

A Step Toward the Future

The journey to this moment has been a long one. According to City Councillor Rock Whissell, finding a permanent home for pickleball in Timmins has been a priority for years. “For the last six years, I know that they’ve been looking for a permanent location and I’m happy that we finally have two pickleball courts available,” he said. The city isn’t stopping here; plans depend on the sport’s growing popularity, with the potential to add more courts across Timmins.

Players are already hinting at the need for expansion. The new facility is a resurfaced, repurposed multi-sport court, but with 113 active members and counting, space is becoming a concern.

A Sport for All Ages

Pickleball’s appeal lies in its accessibility. The sport is especially popular with seniors and families, thanks to its low-impact nature, making it an excellent choice for people looking to stay active.

“It’s growing phenomenally. Lots more young people are getting involved — it’s just taking off. People really seem to enjoy it, it’s easy to pick up.” – (Brenda Gray)

City officials see pickleball as more than just a game—it’s a way to promote health and wellness across the community.

The city’s recreation master plan highlights a growing demand for outdoor sports facilities, with initiatives to build new amenities and refurbish existing ones. In a move that symbolizes the sport’s rising influence, Timmins has reduced its tennis courts from 11 to 10 to make way for this dedicated pickleball court.
