North Okanagan Teen Wins National Pickleball Tour: In a remarkable display of talent, 15-year-old Chayton Hauberg from Coldstream has made headlines as the youngest player to win gold at a national pickleball tournament. Hauberg competed in the Myoflex 2024 Pickleball Canada National Championship in Halifax last month, marking a significant milestone in his young career.
Having taken up the sport just over three years ago with his grandparents, Hauberg’s dedication is evident as he trains at the Vernon pickleball club five times a week.
Facing the Challenge
Competing in the 15 to 29 age category, Hauberg expressed confidence despite facing older opponents.
“I’ve only ever played maybe three people who were actually my age. I’ve been playing with people a lot older the whole time I’ve been playing.” – (Hauberg)
The tournament, held from August 20 to August 24, featured a rally point system, a deviation from the traditional format where points are only scored while serving.
“I wasn’t used to playing that at all. Neither were the refs actually. It was a little bit of a learning experience for everyone.” – (Hauberg)
Overcoming Obstacles
The outdoor setting presented additional difficulties, particularly the wind, which Hauberg found challenging.
“I’d say the thing that threw me off the most was the wind. We play at the indoor facility here in Vernon so I’d say the wind was a big factor that I was not used to at all since we were playing outside there.” – (Hauberg)
Tournament Dynamics
The double knockout-style competition required players to lose two matches to be eliminated. Hauberg played five matches, with only two extending to the full three-game format, and emerged victorious in all. The matches, lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, showcased his skill and adaptability.
“It always does feel really nice to get gold and be up on the podium, but I just love playing. I’ve been playing for so long now. It’s just so fun. I love the competition too, being competitive like that is so fun. I love all of it.” – (Hauberg)
Rising Star
Hauberg’s success extends beyond this championship. He holds close to 30 medals from various tournaments over the past two years and recently earned a silver medal in Penticton at a 4.5-level game for doubles. His passion for pickleball has not only enhanced his physical activity but also enriched his social life.
“I’m training a lot and working out to try and sustain that level of improvement. It is very good for anyone to get into for a variety of different reasons.” – (Hauberg)
