Vernon Pickleball Tournament Dominated By South Okanagan: The Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championships, held in Vernon from July 25-28, showed remarkable talent from the South Okanagan. A formidable 36 local players competed among 626 participants from British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan across various skill levels and event categories.
Mixed Doubles Victories
The South Okanagan athletes excelled in Mixed Doubles Pickleball with standout performances. Anita and Rick Marshall clinched gold in the 3.5 skill level for the 60-64 age group. Lori Burgoyne and Mark Hammerquist secured bronze in the 65-69 category. Dave Burgoyne and Helen Konanz earned bronze in the 4.5 skill level for ages 50 and above. Michelle and Barry Tremblay narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 60-64 age group, while Sue Hatfield and Pat Meyer rounded out the top five in the 4.0 skill level for ages 65 and over.
Women’s Doubles Success
In Women’s Doubles Pickleball, Lori Burgoyne and Anita Marshall brought home gold in the 3.5 skill level for ages 60-64. Megan Dorrington and Tennille Beaumont also claimed gold in the 4.0 skill level for ages 13-49. Leanne Barnes and Donna Hammerquist achieved silver in the 3.0 skill level for ages 65 and up.
Men’s Doubles Dominance
The Men’s Doubles Pickleball saw impressive victories from Carel Froneman and Jim Chapman, who won gold in the 4.0 skill level for ages 70 and above. Sunny Buttar and Jordan Renwick won in the 5.0 skill level for ages 13 and older. Barry Tremblay and Steve Tidder finished fourth in the 4.0 skill level for ages 60-64.
Men’s Singles Achievements
In Men’s Singles Pickleball, Dave Burgoyne claimed gold in the 4.0 skill level for ages 60 and above, while Barry Tremblay earned fifth place. Sunny Buttar secured fourth place in the 5.0 skill level for ages 13 and over.
The South Okanagan’s remarkable performances show the region’s growing pickleball skills and competitive spirit.
