Patrício Pitbull Bio
Patrício André de Sousa Freire, known professionally as Patrício Pitbull, is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist who currently competes in the Featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Born on July 7, 1987, in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, he built his reputation as one of the most accomplished champions in Bellator MMA history, where he held the Featherweight and Lightweight titles and is widely regarded as the greatest Bellator fighter of all time.
Across more than two decades in the sport, Patrício Pitbull has been recognized for his striking power, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt grappling, and the high-level competition he has produced against elite opposition. The younger brother of fellow MMA standout Patricky Pitbull, he has been a major figure in the Brazilian fight scene since turning professional in 2004.
Early Life and Background
Patrício Pitbull was born in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, and grew up in the outskirts of Natal, the region where he continues to live and train. He began training Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the age of ten, partly to help him handle the social pressure of being smaller than many of his peers.
As a teenager, he joined the famous Chute Boxe academy, where he shared the mats with established mixed martial artists such as Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio Rua. That early exposure to a team known for aggressive striking and grappling helped shape the well-rounded skill set he would later bring to the professional circuit.
Path to MMA
Patrício Pitbull made his professional debut in March 2004 at the age of 16. For the next five and a half years, he fought exclusively in his native Brazil, building an undefeated 12-0 record with most of those wins coming by way of stoppage. The run established him as one of the top prospects outside the North American fight scene.
His growing résumé eventually attracted international attention, and he was signed by Bellator MMA, where he was tabbed for the Bellator Featherweight Tournament in 2010. That move to the American stage marked his transition from regional standout to global mixed martial arts contender.
Patrício Pitbull Career
Early Career (2004-2010)
Patrício Pitbull opened his professional career in 2004 on the Brazilian regional circuit, where he racked up twelve straight victories over his first five years. The streak was built largely on finishes, with most bouts ending before the final bell.
He trained with Team Nogueira during this early stage of his career, an affiliation that gave him access to high-level training partners in both striking and submission grappling. By the time he left Brazil for Bellator in 2010, he was widely considered one of the most promising featherweights outside the major North American promotions.
Bellator MMA Breakthrough (2010-2021)
Patrício Pitbull debuted at Bellator 15 in April 2010, submitting Will Romero in the first round of the Bellator Featherweight Tournament. He advanced with a unanimous decision over Wilson Reis at Bellator 18, then lost a hard-fought split decision to Joe Warren in the tournament final at Bellator 23. The loss did little to slow his rise, and in Bellator Season Four he scored back-to-back third-round knockouts of Georgi Karakhanyan and Wilson Reis before winning the tournament final against Daniel Mason-Straus at Bellator 45.
A broken hand postponed his title rematch with Warren, and he was later beaten in a close split decision by Pat Curran at Bellator 85. After finishing Jared Downing, Diego Nunes, Fabricio Guerreiro, and Justin Wilcox to win the Season Nine Featherweight Tournament, he finally got his title shot. At Bellator 123 in September 2014, he defeated Curran by unanimous decision to become Bellator Featherweight Champion.
His first reign included successful defenses against Daniel Mason-Straus, Daniel Weichel, and Emmanuel Sanchez, before he dropped the title to Daniel Straus in their third meeting at Bellator 145 in November 2015. A planned move to lightweight ended in a broken shin in his bout with Benson Henderson at Bellator 160. He reclaimed the featherweight crown from Straus via guillotine choke at Bellator 178 in April 2017, then defended it against Weichel at Bellator 203 and Sanchez at Bellator 209. In May 2019, he knocked out Michael Chandler at Bellator 221 to add the Bellator Lightweight World Championship, becoming only the second fighter in company history to hold two titles at once.
UFC and Return to Form (2025-Present)
After his Bellator contract was dissolved in early 2025, Patrício Pitbull signed with the UFC and was booked against former Interim UFC Featherweight Champion Yair Rodríguez at UFC 314 on April 12, 2025, in Miami, Florida. He lost the debut by unanimous decision but rebounded at UFC 318 on July 19, 2025, taking a unanimous decision over Dan Ige. A scheduled September 2025 booking against Losene Keita fell through at the weigh-ins when his opponent came in over the non-title limit.
Style and Strengths
Patrício Pitbull is known for a balanced skill set that combines sharp counter striking with high-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His guillotine choke has finished several championship opponents, and his counters off the back foot have produced some of his signature knockouts. The mix of composure, timing, and grappling pedigree has made him a difficult puzzle for elite opposition across multiple weight classes.
Notable Events and Milestones
Some of the standout moments of his career include his first Bellator title win over Pat Curran in 2014, his first-round knockout of Michael Chandler to become a two-division champion in 2019, and his 2022 rematch victory over A. J. McKee to reclaim the featherweight title. His UFC debut at UFC 314 marked another milestone as one of the most decorated Bellator alumni to cross over to the sport’s biggest stage.

2025 Season Performance
The 2025 season marked a new chapter for Patrício Pitbull following his release from Bellator and his subsequent signing with the UFC. He opened the year by losing a unanimous decision to Yair Rodríguez in his UFC debut at UFC 314, but quickly returned to form with a unanimous decision win over Dan Ige at UFC 318 in July.
A planned September 2025 fight against Losene Keita was canceled at the weigh-ins when Keita came in over the featherweight non-title limit, leaving Pitbull without a second summer outing. Despite the interruption, the Ige victory showed he remains a dangerous gatekeeper at the UFC featherweight level.
Heading into 2026, Pitbull is expected to continue as a ranked UFC featherweight, drawing on his championship experience across multiple major organizations. His mix of veteran poise and finishing ability should keep him in meaningful matchups as the division continues to evolve.
