The Great Divide: Pickleball’s Ascent Threatens Tennis’ Popularity

Pickleball’s Ascent Threatens Tennis’ Popularity: Tennis is feeling the pressure as pickleball gains popularity. Legends like John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova criticize pickleball, saying it lacks the athleticism and depth of tennis. They also worry about the impact of converting tennis courts into pickleball courts, reducing playtime for tennis enthusiasts.

The Appeal of Pickleball

Gaurav Natekar, CEO of the World Pickleball League (WPBL) and a tennis veteran, shares his thoughts. He notes that many new pickleball players have not played other sports. Pickleball’s inclusive nature allows a five-year-old to compete with a 75-year-old, and 40% of players are women. The sport’s low entry barriers and minimal space requirements make it attractive.

“One tennis court can double up to four pickleball courts,” (Gaurav Natekar).

While major events like the Grand Slams will remain unaffected, more people are adopting pickleball. In 2023, a study found that the number of pickleball players surpassed tennis players among Apple Watch users.

“Tennis and badminton are tough games to learn. Pickleball, on the other hand, you can pick up in one or two sessions,” (Gaurav Natekar).

Opportunities for Brands

Pickleball also offers new opportunities for brands. It attracts companies seeking to move away from cricket’s high costs and clutter. Natekar believes brands can build narratives around pickleball at this early stage.

“Over the days leading up to the tournament, you will see some very different ideas come through,” (Gaurav Natekar).

Exciting Upcoming League

India’s first professional pickleball league will start on January 24, 2025, at the iconic Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Natekar is excited about the competitiveness among 48 players from 14 countries. The event will feature entertainment like music concerts, stand-up comedy, and food stalls, making it more than just a pickleball match.

The league aims to attract large crowds, even if not everyone comes specifically for pickleball. Team owners like Riteish Genelia Deshmukh and Swiggy are bringing their successful brands to the event, adding a layer of off-court competition.

A New Era in Sports

As pickleball continues to grow, it offers fresh challenges and opportunities for tennis. With the upcoming league and rising popularity, pickleball is not just a passing trend; it may redefine how sports are played and marketed in India.
