Chennai Super Champs Build Momentum: Chennai Super Champs (CSC) finished fifth in the World Pickleball League (WPBL) after a strong comeback following a difficult start. The team secured 25 points from five ties, winning eight matches and drawing one. Despite an opening 5-0 loss to Bengaluru Jawans, CSC adapted its strategies and improved performances as the tournament progressed.
Resilience and Tactical Adjustments
After the initial loss, CSC reworked its game plan and secured a 3-2 victory against the Hyderabad Superstars. The team focused on refining its playing style, making key adjustments that helped in winning crucial points.
“Despite Maria Klokotzy’s absence disrupting our balance, CSC refused to back down. After early setbacks, we showed resilience, adapted, and fought our way back, winning matches and hearts along the way. We proved that true success is also about spirit and determination. In the end, the real champion of WPBL was pickleball itself, and CSC was proud to play a defining role in its journey.” – (Himank Duvurru, co-owner of Chennai Super Champs)
Players Step Up to Deliver Results
Head coach Joey Farias praised the team’s determination.
“We certainly got back to the drawing board after the initial game against Bengaluru. The team realised there were certain aspects of the game that required greater focus from our end. Our squad had to undergo some last-minute changes and hence the repercussions of the same were bound to be felt in the earlier games. However, I am exceedingly proud of how my players bounced back.” – (Joey Farias)
Edward Perez and Sonu Vishwakarma played a crucial role in setting the tone for matches through men’s singles. Sarah Jane Lim, Thaddea Lock, and Anna Clarice Patrimonio made key contributions in women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The duo of Tanner Tomassi and Etienne Blaszkewycz won their last four matches in a row, strengthening CSC’s comeback efforts.
Looking Ahead to the Next Season
Chennai Super Champs gained sponsorships from Satyabhama, Gataca, Apollo, 3 Sisters, Secret Alchemist, and Tula by the end of the season. With their roster improving and strategies refined, the team is confident about making the semi-finals in the next WPBL edition.
