Manufacturers Struggle: CROWN PICKLEBALL Withdraws Over Certification Costs

CROWN PICKLEBALL Withdraws Over Certification Costs: CROWN PICKLEBALL has announced its withdrawal from professional pickleball certification bodies due to rising fees imposed on manufacturers. The decision comes as USA Pickleball and UPA start charging exorbitant certification fees for paddles and balls, which the company views as a pay-to-play scheme that limits competition.

Rising Costs Impacting Manufacturers

As of now, USA Pickleball is charging manufacturers $4,500 for each paddle certification. UPA is demanding a $50,000 annual media buy fee, in addition to $2,000 per paddle. Furthermore, USA Pickleball charges $2,500 for ball approval. These hefty fees pose a significant challenge for small businesses like CROWN PICKLEBALL, which aims to keep its products affordable and accessible.

Shift to the Pickleball Manufacturers Association

In response to these challenges, CROWN PICKLEBALL is shifting its focus to the Pickleball Manufacturers Association (PMA). This new trade organization prioritizes the recreational market, which makes up 99.5% of pickleball players. According to CROWN PICKLEBALL, most recreational players are more interested in high-quality, reasonably priced equipment than in obtaining endorsements from established bodies like USA Pickleball or UPA.

Impact on Sponsorships and Player Support

CROWN PICKLEBALL’s decision to exit the professional pickleball ecosystem means they will stop sponsoring professional players. This shift could negatively impact up-and-coming athletes who rely on financial support from brands.

“This is perhaps one of the biggest unintended consequences of such a brazen money-grab by these entities,” (the company).

By withdrawing from these organizations, brands like CROWN PICKLEBALL may limit funding for players and restrict access to quality equipment.

Commitment to Quality and Customer Service

CROWN PICKLEBALL has built its reputation on providing great products at fair prices. They emphasize their commitment to customer service, including honoring complaints and offering refunds or replacements. The company believes that they do not need to pay a third party for validation of their business practices. They encourage other small businesses facing similar pressures to consider their options and to prioritize what is best for their operations.
