Brooke Buckner Reflects on Loss to Anna Leigh Waters and the Evolution of Women’s Singles

Brooke Buckner Reflects on Loss to Anna Leigh Waters: Brooke Buckner shared her thoughts after falling to Anna Leigh Waters in a competitive match. In an interview with PickleballTV, Buckner reflected on her performance, emphasizing that she executed her game plan but was ultimately outplayed.

“I mean, I feel like for the most part, I stuck to the plan. You know, she stepped up. It was obviously a race to the net on the right ball, and she just executed a little bit better than I did. I obviously had a lead and a volley on top of the net that I’ll think about for a while. But, I mean, I think as far as the game plan, I think I stuck to it.” – (Buckner)

Adjusting to the Evolving Game

As women’s singles pickleball becomes increasingly competitive, Buckner acknowledged that simply relying on her passing shots was no longer enough to win at the highest level. She recognized the need to adapt her style to match the athleticism of her opponents.

“It’s just who could execute their plan better. I think as the depth of women’s singles has gotten so much better, I knew that I wasn’t gonna get by just passing people because that was what I relied on so heavily. It’s still there. But, you know, as everybody gets better and better and more athletic, it wasn’t gonna work.” – (Buckner)

Committing to an Aggressive Strategy

Buckner emphasized her decision to improve her approach and take a more aggressive stance at the net. She expressed her determination to push forward despite the risks.

“So it was either I was gonna lose more or I was gonna improve, coming forward and just, like, I always say, put your big girl pants on and go to the net. I’d rather lose that way.” – (Buckner)

Buckner’s reflections highlight the increasing skill level in professional women’s pickleball and the constant adjustments players must make to remain competitive.
