NFL Stars Challenge Fans in Pickleball, Raise Funds for Health Organizations

NFL Stars Challenge Fans in Pickleball: NFL quarterbacks Drake Maye and Sam Howell swapped the football field for the pickleball court on March 5, headlining a charity tournament at Tipsy Pickle in Charlotte. The event, “Beat an NFL QB,” gave fans a chance to challenge the former UNC standouts in head-to-head pickleball matches while raising funds for local health organizations.

Pickleball Takes Center Stage

The tournament showcased Maye’s pickleball prowess, as the Patriots rookie—known for playing the sport regularly—dominated rallies. Howell, now with the Seahawks, admitted he was at a disadvantage.

“I’m definitely not as good as Drake, he plays a lot, I don’t play a whole lot,” Howell told WCNC.

Fans of all skill levels lined up for their shot to outplay an NFL quarterback, with games featuring fast-paced volleys and competitive matchups. The event created an electric atmosphere, bringing together professional athletes, pickleball enthusiasts, and community supporters.

Raising Money Through Pickleball

The event wasn’t just about competition—it was about using pickleball to give back. Proceeds supported three Charlotte-based health organizations:

  • The Katie Blessing Foundation, which helps families facing childhood illnesses.
  • Agnes Weisiger Breast Health Center at Novant, which provides breast health services.
  • Go Jen Go Foundation, which supports breast cancer patients.

In addition to tournament play, attendees bid on exclusive sports memorabilia, including signed jerseys from Peyton and Eli Manning, with heated bidding wars further boosting donations.

Pickleball’s Growing Role in Sports Charity Events

This event is another example of pickleball’s growing presence in professional sports circles. The game’s accessibility allows athletes from all backgrounds—including NFL quarterbacks—to compete, engage with fans, and raise money for good causes.

Between matches, Maye and Howell reflected on their deep ties to North Carolina and their excitement to see the sport continue to grow.
