MCPS Pioneers Global Pickleball Exchange in China: A group of 31 student-athletes from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will travel to China for a pickleball exchange program from April 9-21, 2025. The students will visit Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing, where they will take part in friendly competitions while fostering cultural exchange and international connections.
Expanding Pickleball Through Global Exchange
MCPS is the first school district in the U.S. to offer pickleball as a varsity sport. The program began as a pilot in 11 high schools in 2023 before expanding to all 25 high schools in 2024. The trip aims to use pickleball as a bridge between students from different backgrounds, reinforcing the sport’s inclusive nature.
In preparation, students are participating in weekly pickleball practices and cultural engagement sessions. The initiative reflects MCPS’s commitment to using sports to bring people together and promote global understanding.
Support from Key Partners
The trip is supported by Dill Dinkers, a nationwide indoor pickleball facility, and JOOLA, the world’s largest pickleball company. Dill Dinkers is hosting training sessions for the students, while JOOLA is providing paddles and apparel.
“We are honored and excited to represent MCPS in this incredible opportunity to showcase the powerful impact of athletics in bringing people together,” said Jeffrey Sullivan, MCPS Director of Systemwide Athletics.
“Pickleball is an inclusive sport that embodies our R.A.I.S.E. core values for MCPS Athletics and we look forward to engaging in spirited competition, while learning and embracing Chinese culture.” – (Jeffrey Sullivan)
Growing the Sport’s Reach
Pickleball has grown rapidly within MCPS, and this exchange further strengthens its role in youth sports. The trip allows students to develop their skills, experience new cultures, and expand the sport’s reach internationally. With continued support and enthusiasm, the program may inspire future global exchanges and further investment in pickleball at the high school level.
