Megan Fudge’s Global Adventures: Megan Fudge, fresh off a whirlwind of travels and tournaments, takes a moment to reflect on her busy schedule in her August blog. From her current beachside retreat in Antalya, Turkey, she shares insights into her recent pickleball endeavors and the exciting growth of the sport on a global scale.
From Kansas City to London
The journey began with a team competition in Kansas City. Fudge’s family was left in Panama City Beach with Ryler, who was tasked with finalizing the RV. They then regrouped in Charlotte to catch a flight to London, aiming to avoid the disruptions caused by Hurricane Debby. Their destination was the much-anticipated English Open, powered by the APP.
A Memorable Return to the English Open
The English Open holds a special place in Fudge’s heart, marking not only her first international tournament but also the first competition for her children. Last year’s event was memorable, with Fudge’s family—especially her parents from Germany—playing a significant role in the experience.
This year, the tournament in Telford was even larger, featuring over 2000 participants from across the globe and 40 indoor courts. The competition was fierce, with players from Europe, Australia, and India showing their skills.
Exciting Tournament Highlights
The tournament kicked off with the Battle of the Paddles, where various paddle companies were represented. Fudge and Ryler, representing Franklin, secured the mixed doubles title in a final against The Owl. Although Fudge chose to forgo singles to preserve her strength for upcoming events, she was impressed by the high level of competition and notable performances, including Molly’s gold medal win and Ryler’s silver in singles.
In women’s doubles, Fudge teamed up with Susannah to form the FudgeBarr, earning silver after a tough semifinal battle against an Australian team. The gold medal went to Allison and Kelsey, who won after a demanding day of matches.
A Winning Mixed Doubles Finish
Fudge’s mixed doubles team, dubbed Mint Fudge with Jack Munro, emerged victorious in a hard-fought final against Allison and Eric. Munro, a promising junior player from the University of Texas and part of the Next Gen APP team, proved to be a formidable partner, showing impressive lefty-righty coordination on the court.
Camaraderie and Sightseeing
The tournament concluded with a unique gathering in the hotel lobby, where international players celebrated their achievements and shared stories. This sense of camaraderie is a rare and cherished aspect of the pickleball community.
The next day, Fudge and her family explored Telford and Iron Bridge, enjoyed a hike at the Wrekin, and prepared for their journey to London for a flight to Turkey. They now look forward to a week of vacation on the beautiful beaches of Antalya before heading to Mumbai for their next tournament.
