Liam Foudy’s Rise Fueled by Family and Fierce Rivalry

Liam Foudy’s path to professional hockey began deeply influenced by his family’s strong athletic background. Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Foudy was surrounded by sports from an early age, with his father Sean Foudy having played professionally in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and his mother France Gareau having earned a silver medal in the 4×100 meter relay at the 1984 Summer Olympics. It was in this environment that Foudy first stepped onto the ice at just four years old, setting the stage for his own athletic career.

“Growing up and having parents who are athletes, they kind of just throw you in every sport to find out what you’re good at,”

Foudy said.

“Hockey ended up being the one that I liked the most and I followed that up throughout growing up in Toronto.”

The Rivalry That Sparked a Competitive Drive

Competition played a key role in shaping Foudy’s motivation to succeed. When his younger brother, Jean-Luc Foudy, was born two years after him, their sibling rivalry quickly became a catalyst for improvement and determination. Both brothers pushed each other from an early age, competing relentlessly on and off the ice.

“We were competitive right from the get-go,”

Foudy explained.

“Just not wanting to lose to each other and me being the older brother, [I was] always trying to be hard on him. We definitely had a lot of good battles growing up and that really pushed us to succeed to where we are today.”

The Discipline Behind Early Success

The Foudy family’s commitment to training was firm, and skipping practice was not an option. This discipline contributed to the brothers’ development and now serves as a foundation for Liam’s professional routine.

“It was just a commitment,” Foudy said.

“We were never allowed to miss practice. Sometimes, as a kid, you don’t want to go to practice. You just want to play games, [but] my mom made sure that we never missed any of that.”

Amateur Achievements Highlighting Talent and Growth

Liam Foudy’s talent blossomed in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he spent four seasons with the London Knights. Throughout 230 games, he amassed 191 points, nearly evenly split between goals and assists. His performance earned him a place on Team Canada, where he helped secure a gold medal at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, solidifying his reputation on the international stage.

Professional Journey from Draft to Present

Selected 18th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2018 NHL Draft, Foudy’s professional career has involved multiple stops predominantly within the American Hockey League (AHL). Besides time with the Blue Jackets’ affiliate Cleveland Monsters, he also played for the Milwaukee Admirals, affiliated with the Nashville Predators. In 2024, he joined the Bridgeport Islanders, where he has found stability and success.

At 25 years old, Foudy has appeared in 104 NHL games, including two with the New York Islanders last season. However, his most consistent production has come with Bridgeport. In his first season with the Islanders’ AHL team, he notched 45 points, including 20 goals, finishing third on the team. His current campaign has him second in goals scored and ranking third in total points.

“[I’m] just trying to use my speed as much as I can,”

Foudy said.

“I feel like when I’m skating, moving my feet as much as I can, … that’s when I can create some chances and try to finish on the opportunities.”

Focus on Consistency and Team Success

Following his career-best season, Foudy signed a one-year, two-way contract to remain with the Islanders organization. His aim is to maintain steady performance throughout the 2025-26 season, understanding the importance of daily preparation both on and off the ice.

“If you can be the most consistent player, usually things go a lot better for you,”

he commented.

“Knowing what I need to do day in and day out at the rink, and away from the rink as well, [so I] stay ready for every game that comes along.”

In the current season, Foudy has maintained a strong presence, tallying 27 points through 37 games. He recently enjoyed a hat-trick on February 7 in a 5-1 victory against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, before a 10-game point streak came to an end.

Contributing to Team Momentum and Leadership

The 26-year-old forward played a pivotal role in a five-game winning streak for Bridgeport during January, helping the team accumulate 21 wins in their first season under head coach Rocky Thompson—already surpassing last year’s total. Foudy credits the team’s accomplishments to collective trust and following coaching guidance.

“Team success is a big factor,”

Foudy remarked.

“Whenever the team is winning games, usually individual success follows that. [By] trusting what [Head Coach] Rocky [Thompson] and the coaching staff has laid out for us … and believing that system, … we can be the most successful that we can be.”

Liam Foudy’s athletic journey reflects a blend of inherited talent, a competitive family environment, and steadfast dedication, all of which have propelled him from his early days in Scarborough to the professional rinks of North America. As he continues to grow with the Bridgeport Islanders and aim for greater NHL opportunities, his perseverance and consistency will likely determine the next stages of his career.
