Patrick Staropoli’s NASCAR Comeback After 10 Years Away

Patrick Staropoli, a Florida native, appeared destined for a NASCAR career after winning the PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge in 2013. This victory secured him a development contract with Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) and part-time rides in the K&N Pro Series East and West, now known as the ARCA Menards Series East and West, with McAnally-Hilgemann Racing. He notably captured a victory at Irwindale Speedway in the West Series during 2014.

However, after MWR shut down following the 2015 season, Staropoli’s NASCAR opportunities effectively ended. He made a single race appearance at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2016 for SS GreenLight Racing before stepping away from the national racing scene for nearly ten years.

Balancing Medical Career with a Return to Racing

During his absence from NASCAR, Staropoli pursued medical school, ultimately becoming a vitreoretinal surgeon based in Houston, Texas. Last year marked his return to national racing circuits, including the ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR’s O’Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series. This year, he has paused his medical practice to compete full-time in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (NOAPS) with Big Machine Racing, driving the SYFOVRE Chevrolet in the No. 48 car.

Speaking with Frontstretch, Staropoli described his comeback and the challenge in managing dual careers.

“Man, it’s what I’ve been telling everyone. It’s been a dream come true to have this opportunity to compete full time in this series, drive for Big Machine Racing with the SYFOVRE Chevrolet. It’s what I’ve been working toward my entire life, my entire driving career to get a shot like this, and I’m just really excited to be out here. We’re kicking off the season strong.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

Joining Big Machine Racing: A Team and Opportunity

Staropoli praised the culture and intensity at Big Machine Racing, highlighting their attention to detail and shared passion for winning. After competing for several teams across different series last year, he values the stability of working full-time with one crew and group.

“This team’s great. They’re intense. Everyone’s meticulous about what they do. Everyone’s passionate about putting the best possible product on the track, and it’s nice to be surrounded by a group of people like that that all want to go out there and perform as well and win as badly as I want to. It’s cool to be with a group full time.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

He noted that having a consistent crew chief like Patrick Donahue, known for his old-school approach and deep experience in NASCAR, has been invaluable in his adjustment to full-time racing.

“Anytime you have a chance to work with a Rainbow Warrior, I mean, it’s a cool deal. I grew up watching this sport and falling in love with it in the ’90s, when the No. 24 car (Jeff Gordon) was at its peak, and you could tell that Patrick took a lot of the lessons he learned back then working with Ray [Evernham] and applies them throughout the years… Having someone with that depth of experience for me to lean on, since I’m relatively inexperienced in these cars at this point, has been super helpful.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

The Role of Scott Borchetta and Late-Season Opportunity

Staropoli revealed that Scott Borchetta, owner of Big Machine Racing, played a crucial role in his current opportunity, extending full-time support after discussions and observation of his previous performances. Though the deal came together late in the offseason, Staropoli seized the chance immediately.

“I don’t know how all the pieces fell together, but I know that I got a phone call from Scott and it’s an opportunity of a lifetime to get in this No. 48 car. And I obviously jumped on it as soon as I knew it was a possibility.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

Reflecting on his previous race outings, especially strong runs in ARCA and the Truck Series last year, Staropoli acknowledged that consistent competitive performances helped open the door to this full-time ride.

Filling Big Shoes Amid Fan Favorites and Competition

Replacing drivers like Parker Kligerman and Nick Sanchez, both popular and established with fans, Staropoli understands the pressure of winning over a new audience while continuing to learn and grow in top-tier NASCAR competition. Still, he remains motivated by the equipment and team support that position him to compete near the front of the field.

“It’s pressure, but it’s a welcome pressure. It’s something that you always want as a race car driver to be in a position to do that.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

Reflecting on Early Promise and the Challenges That Followed

Staropoli described how his promising NASCAR trajectory was stalled mainly by the closure of Michael Waltrip Racing, which eliminated his primary development path. He emphasized that, even during setbacks, he never gave up on his racing aspirations while pursuing his medical education.

“When MWR kind of ceased to exist at that point, that was sort of the end of that path for me, but I never gave up. So that’s a lesson to everybody out there, never give up on your dreams.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

He shared the gritty reality of his decade-long pursuit to return to NASCAR’s national series, highlighting the frequent rejections and persistence required to finally reenter the sport.

“Every day when you’re working toward that, you’re asking people for whether it’s sponsorship or it’s a ride or funding or using kind of the friendships and connections that you have to try to get your foot back in the door. It’s a lot of no’s before that one yes, and all it takes is is that one yes and you go out there and perform, and that leads to more opportunities.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver

Putting Medicine on Hold to Pursue Racing Full Time

Last year, Staropoli juggled racing and his medical career simultaneously, which he described as a demanding balancing act. This year, with a packed 16-week race schedule, he has taken a sabbatical from his surgical practice. His partners at Retina Consultants of Texas are supporting his temporary departure, ensuring patient care continues during his absence.

“I’m taking a little bit of a sabbatical. So I’m pausing my practicing from now essentially through November, and I’m really thankful to all my partners at Retina Consultants of Texas out in Houston… It’s nice to walk into a clinic day and have people talk about the racing that you did in the prior weekend.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver and vitreoretinal surgeon

Understanding His Medical Profession and Its Connection to Racing

As a vitreoretinal surgeon, Staropoli specializes in treating serious eye conditions, including retinal tears, detachments, trauma, and diseases such as macular degeneration. His racing car, sponsored by SYFOVRE, also serves as a platform to raise awareness for macular degeneration, linking his two passions.

“I’m a vitreoretinal surgeon. It’s a big fancy word, basically just means that anything that goes wrong inside of an eye is what we fix… One of the main things that we treat as well is macular degeneration, which is something that happens as you get older. What we’re doing with the SYFOVRE car is trying to raise some awareness for macular degeneration.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver and surgeon

Comparing the Challenges of Medicine and Motorsports

When asked which is more difficult—medical school or racing—Staropoli replied both are challenging in unique ways. He contrasted the competitive intensity of racing, where speed against rivals is critical, with the meticulous, patient-centered approach needed in surgery.

“When you’re trying to take care of someone, you’re going to spend as much time as you need to and be as meticulous as you need to to do the best job possible. And when you’re out here, it’s about being as fast as possible, and you got 37 other people trying to do it faster than you… Definitely stepping up to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series this year is a big leap, but a challenge that I’m ready for.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver and surgeon

Maintaining Academic Success While Pursuing Racing as a Teenager

Staropoli credited his parents and early car owners for insisting on good academic performance as a precondition for racing. Their support motivated him to balance schoolwork and competitive driving effectively, a discipline necessary to pursue both college and racing simultaneously.

“The deal with my parents and all my car owners, everyone I’ve driven for growing up was that I had to do good in school if I wanted to race, and I really wanted to race. So that was a big motivating factor for me.” ?Patrick Staropoli, NASCAR driver and surgeon

He recognized the slim odds of becoming a professional race driver and valued education as a vital alternative path in life, reinforcing his commitment to both endeavors throughout his youth.

Significance of Staropoli’s Return to NASCAR

Patrick Staropoli’s return to NASCAR after a decade-long gap is a remarkable story of perseverance and dual careers. His journey underscores the complexity of maintaining professional-level athletic competitiveness alongside a demanding medical profession. With Big Machine Racing’s full-time support and the expertise of experienced teammates like crew chief Patrick Donahue, Staropoli is positioned to make a strong impact in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series this season.

His unique background as a vitreoretinal surgeon also brings a distinctive perspective to racing, blending his passion for motorsports with efforts to increase awareness of eye health issues. The full-time commitment and promising equipment could propel Staropoli to a notable place among NASCAR’s growing talents in this highly competitive series.
