Jack Draper’s Emotional Davis Cup Comeback After 164 Days Away

Jack Draper marked his long-awaited return to competitive tennis with a commanding Davis Cup victory over Norway’s Viktor Durasovic in Oslo. After being sidelined for 164 days due to a serious arm injury, Draper bounced back with a 6-2, 6-2 win, giving Great Britain a strong start in the first qualifying round. This match allowed Draper to make a controlled reentry into competition, demonstrating his readiness and determination.

Overcoming Injury and Missed Opportunities

Draper’s journey back to the court has been fraught with challenges, having only played one match after Wimbledon in 2025 before his injury sidelined him. He missed the Australian Open recently, a decision that allowed him to focus on recovery. Draper was unexpectedly spared a tough encounter with Norway’s top player Casper Ruud, who withdrew from the tie to spend time with his family following the birth of his child.

With Ruud’s withdrawal, Draper faced less resistance in his comeback, using the opportunity to showcase his improved form and regain confidence. His dominant performance over Durasovic highlighted his talent and hinted at the potential for a full return to top-level tennis.

Reflection on a Difficult Recovery Period

Draper openly acknowledged the mental and physical difficulties he endured during his time away from the sport. He expressed the emotional toll of the recovery process while emphasizing the unseen hard work he invested to maintain his skills and resilience.

“It’s been a really difficult time since I’ve been away from the sport,”

Draper said.

“I knew I had to keep on practising my hardest and learn about myself. That’s the hard work no-one sees. When I come back, hopefully I am able to play some top tennis again.”

Despite the low points, he remained in a positive mindset through the dark moments, highlighting the constant learning process within professional tennis.

“I’ve stayed in a good place, although it’s been tricky with a lot of dark moments and a lot of tough times, but that’s the sport I signed up for, lots of tough times. You’re always learning, always growing. I’m happy to be back playing again,”

Draper added.

The excitement of returning to competition was another strong motivator for Draper, who missed the adrenaline and atmosphere that only live matches can provide.

“I just missed the buzz of competing, to be honest. I missed the thrill of playing in front of people, against great players and that winning feeling you can’t replicate in training. It’s going to feel great to get back out there again.”

Maintaining Confidence for the Road Ahead

Draper reflected on the contrasting halves of the previous year: a promising start followed by injury-related setbacks, yet he holds onto the confidence built during his early successes.

“I think last year definitely started off amazingly well. The second half was extremely challenging, but I took a lot of belief and confidence from the first half of the year and what I achieved. I’ve kept that in mind and I want to be competing right at the top of the game.”

“It’s going to be a bit of a challenge and a journey to get back to where I was, just because I’ve been out for such a long time. At the same time I’m constantly getting better and I’m constantly improving still. I hope I get to show that sooner more than later.”

Upcoming Tournaments and Future Outlook

Following his successful Davis Cup return, Draper is set to compete next week at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam. Looking further ahead, he plans to defend his Indian Wells title next month, where he has 1,000 ATP ranking points at stake. These upcoming competitions will provide Draper with crucial opportunities to climb back up the rankings and reestablish himself as a leading player in men’s tennis.

His comeback signifies not only a physical return but also mental resilience and ambition to re-enter the sport’s upper echelons despite earlier setbacks. British tennis followers will be watching closely as Draper looks to translate this promising restart into sustained success on the ATP tour.
