Patrick Mouratoglou stirred controversy with his recent comments about Novak Djokovic following the Serbian star’s victory over Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semifinal. Mouratoglou took to Instagram to express his view on the match and the broader tennis rivalry, focusing on how Djokovic compares with younger players like Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
He argued that judging the current tennis landscape based on a single match is shortsighted. Mouratoglou highlighted that Sinner had won their previous five encounters, suggesting Djokovic’s win was an exception rather than a sign of superiority. Despite Sinner’s physical advantages in speed, power, and serve, Mouratoglou emphasized Djokovic’s unparalleled mental strength as the decisive factor in the match.
“For those who think that [Novak] Djokovic beating [Jannik] Sinner in the semifinal of the Australian Open means that the big three is playing better tennis than [Carlos] Alcaraz and Sinner… This is a very short view,”
Mouratoglou wrote.
“Just remember that Sinner had won the five previous matches they played against each other. One match will not make me change my mind about what I’ve seen for the last two, three years.
“Jannik moves faster, hits harder, takes the ball earlier, and serves better than Novak. But, Novak is the strongest mental in tennis, in history, and that’s what made the difference. That’s what made his whole career.
“Sinner won 12 more points throughout the whole match than Novak, but he lost because Novak won the big ones, the ones that counted the most.”
Assessing Djokovic’s Performance Compared to Younger Rivals
Mouratoglou continued by placing Djokovic’s victory in the context of their rivalry rather than skill levels. He stated that while Djokovic may not outplay Sinner based on pure tennis ability, his competitiveness and mental resilience made him the better player in that particular match.

“Novak is not a better tennis player than Sinner, but he’s the biggest competitor in history, and he was better than Jannik Sinner in that match.”
These views met resistance from notable tennis figures, including Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray, who all expressed disagreement with Mouratoglou’s assessment. The remarks sparked a wider discussion about Djokovic’s current standing amid a changing generation marked by emerging talents like Sinner and Alcaraz.
Serena Williams’ Coach Rick Macci Responds with Praise for Djokovic
In response to Mouratoglou’s comments, Rick Macci, who coached Serena Williams, shared his perspective on Djokovic’s abilities via social media platform X. Macci acknowledged the debate but firmly stated his admiration for Djokovic’s excellence on the court.
“Asked again in a podcast about Mouratoglou doubling down and chirping that Novak does nothing outstanding,”
Macci said.
He elaborated that perceptions vary but insisted Djokovic’s talents stand out clearly to him.
“Everything in life is in the eye of the beholder. The Joker does everything outstanding and more.”
“What you may see is very different than Rick Macci.”
Macci’s remarks highlight the contrast in opinions regarding Djokovic’s place among tennis elite players, especially given his age and persistence competing alongside younger stars.
Djokovic Remains a Strong Contender Despite Age
At 36, Novak Djokovic is the oldest player in the ATP top 10 but continues to challenge younger competitors such as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. His combined head-to-head record against these two rising stars is narrowly negative at 10-11, evidencing the competitive balance within the sport’s upper echelon.
Djokovic trails Sinner 5-6 in their direct matchups and holds an even 5-5 record against Alcaraz. Despite these statistics, the Serbian’s championship experience and mental toughness keep him in title contention at major tournaments.
Upcoming Qatar Open to Feature Showdown Among Tennis’ Top Three
Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Sinner are scheduled to face each other again when the ATP Tour resumes at the Qatar Open starting February 16, 2026. All three enter the tournament as the highest seeds and favorites for the championship, promising high-stakes encounters for tennis enthusiasts.
Djokovic aims to add to his previous two Qatar Open titles, while Alcaraz looks to improve upon last year’s quarterfinal finish in his event debut. Sinner will make his first appearance at the tournament, potentially setting up semifinal clashes involving these leading players.
This event will offer another opportunity to see how Djokovic fares against his main rivals, which could influence discussions around his legacy and ongoing ability to compete amid a talented new generation.
