Medvedev Ball Controversy: De Minaur and Fils Join the Criticism

On Monday, February 9, during the ATP Rotterdam Open’s first round, Daniil Medvedev became embroiled in a contentious argument with the tournament supervisor regarding the unusual shape of the tennis balls used in the event. The Russian player criticized the balls for not being properly round, raising concerns about their impact on the match.

Following this incident, prominent players Alex de Minaur from Australia and France’s Arthur Fils voiced their frustrations about the same issue, joining Medvedev in questioning the quality and behavior of the balls supplied in Rotterdam.

Medvedev’s Direct Remarks on Ball Shape During Match with Ugo Humbert

During his match against Ugo Humbert, Medvedev confronted the tournament supervisor after dropping the first set in a tiebreak, sharply criticizing the HEAD tennis balls for their shape. He asserted,

HEAD balls are not round. So we should not be playing with it. No one should be buying them. We should not be promoting a tennis ball that is not round.

The player blamed the balls for affecting his gameplay, highlighting their abnormal form as unacceptable at this level.

Alex de Minaur Expresses Frustration About Balls During Practice and Match Play

Australian Alex de Minaur echoed Medvedev’s concerns just one day later, admitting difficulty controlling the balls, especially in training sessions. In an interview with Bolavip, he said,

I have struggled a lot in practice. I have actually been quite frustrated with the balls in practice, which is not like me. I do get what Daniil says about the balls.

He further explained the challenge these balls pose, stating,

They are definitely not my favourite. I don’t think they are anyone’s favourite balls. They are very difficult to control. It is tough to explain it, but it is a very dead ball. It does suit the big hitters, the players that have a big revolution on the ball and are able to hit through that.

Despite his reservations, De Minaur accepted the conditions, adding,

But again, it is what it is. The ball or the court is not going to change, and my job is to adapt and do my best and continue doing that.

Arthur Fils Offers Harsh Criticism on Ball Quality and Impact on Play

French newcomer Arthur Fils did not hold back when commenting on the balls’ quality, calling them

terrible. Really terrible. The ball is very bad. It is unbelievable.

He described how the balls behave unnaturally during matches, worsening as play progresses:

When we are playing at this level, literally playing professionally, very good players, then watching the balls after two games getting bigger and very slow, that is not normal.

Fils directly challenged the ATP authorities to improve the standards, stating,

I don’t know who is in charge of it, maybe ATP or whatever, but they have to do better, because it is not normal to play with these balls at our level.

Impact of Ball Issues on Matches and Player Performances in Rotterdam

The questionable behavior of the HEAD balls affected many matches during the tournament. Despite maintaining his serve against Ugo Humbert, Medvedev suffered in the tiebreak, dropping the first set 6-7(4). He found some rhythm in the second set, breaking early to take it 6-3. However, Humbert returned strongly to claim the final set 6-3, eliminating the 2023 Rotterdam champion in the first round.

Meanwhile, Alex de Minaur managed to overcome Arthur Fils despite his frustration with the balls. De Minaur’s strong serving statistics—winning 76% of first serves and 80% of second serves—helped him counter Fils’s aggressive play, even though Fils hit more aces and winners but also made more double faults and unforced errors.

After a close first set that ended in a tiebreak with De Minaur winning five consecutive points, the Australian broke Fils twice in the second set to secure a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory. De Minaur will face Stan Wawrinka, who also dealt with the same balls when defeating Thijs Boogaard, in the round of 16 on Thursday, February 12.

Significance of the Ball Controversy and Potential Consequences for Future Tournaments

The Daniil Medvedev ball controversy has shed light on equipment standards at high-level tennis tournaments and raised questions about the consistency and fairness of conditions players face. Both Medvedev and rising stars like De Minaur and Fils have expressed frustration over how the ball’s condition impairs normal play, especially when balls degrade unusually fast during matches.

The public criticism directed at the ATP and its ball suppliers could prompt organizers to reassess the choice of brands and quality controls to ensure fairness and optimal conditions for competitors. As players prepare for upcoming events, the ball controversy underscores the challenges of adapting to equipment that many believe compromises the integrity of top-tier tennis matches.
