Marin Cilic, more than two decades into his professional tennis journey, remains a formidable presence on the ATP Tour. Currently ranked inside the top 100, the Croatian recently reached the semi-finals at the Dallas Open, demonstrating his continued competitiveness despite his peers Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka stepping away from the sport. Reflecting on his career highlights, Cilic identified his matches against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the pinnacle of his performances, showcasing the significance of these encounters in his lasting legacy.
When asked about his finest displays on court, Cilic pointed to two memorable matches.
“I have to say, playing Roger in the semis of the US Open was an unreal level. Also, Rafa at the Australian Open. A few of those matches were just something at the top,”
he said.
His victory over Federer in the US Open semi-final was particularly notable, as it was his only win against the Swiss legend and led to his sole Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows. Following this triumph, Cilic swiftly defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets to capture his greatest tournament success.
The Intensity of the Australian Open Battle Against Nadal
Cilic’s win against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open quarter-final stands out as his second career victory over the Spanish star. Although Nadal retired during the deciding set, Cilic praised the quality of his performance, emphasizing the harmony between his skills and instincts during the match.
“I would say that was one of the best connections I had in terms of both my skills, playing on the court, feeling the ball, feeling the conditions,”
Cilic remarked.

“And just also playing by instinct, being free, playing by the instinct and everything is flowing beautifully. That was just pure — just absolutely pure, pure tennis.”
After this win, Cilic advanced to the 2018 Australian Open final but ultimately fell to Federer in a five-set marathon, underscoring the intense rivalry among these top players at Grand Slam events.
Possibility for Ranking Improvement as Cilic Eyes a Comeback
Currently ranked World No. 52, Marin Cilic’s recent performances have suggested he has the potential to push higher up the ATP rankings. His limited success earlier in last year, including only reaching the quarter-finals in the Dubai Tennis Championships, means he has few points to defend, offering an opportunity to gain ground over his competitors.
Despite early exits from tournaments like the Madrid Open and Qatar Open last year, Cilic’s form began to rebound with a round of 16 appearance at Wimbledon. At 37 years old, the Croatian veteran could see himself crack the top 30 once again if this upward momentum continues.
The persistence and tenacity Cilic has displayed throughout his career will be key factors as he aims to challenge younger contenders and maintain his status among tennis elites, proving his enduring capabilities on the ATP Tour.
