Alexander Bublik is set to compete next week at the ATP 500 Dubai Tennis Championships as the tournament’s second seed. The 28-year-old Kazakh player, who entered the top ten rankings for the first time earlier this year, opted out of last week’s Qatar Open to focus on his form and health ahead of the Dubai event. Coming off a strong 2025 season and starting 2026 with a title win in Hong Kong, Bublik has demonstrated solid momentum on the ATP Tour so far this year.
After securing his ninth career title in Hong Kong and advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open, Bublik continued his upward trajectory by reaching the semifinals in Rotterdam. Despite these successes, he made the unexpected decision to withdraw from the Qatar Open before playing his first match.
Reasons Behind Bublik’s Decision to Skip the Qatar Open
In a recent interview with Tennis TV, Bublik elaborated on his choice to pull out of the Qatar Open, saying he needed rest after competing in four consecutive events. These included tournaments in Hong Kong, the Australian Open, the Davis Cup, and Rotterdam. While he noted most of these competitions went well for him, except for a loss in the Davis Cup, he acknowledged dealing with some physical challenges prior to Rotterdam.

“Well, I think I really needed that because I have played basically four events in a row,”
Bublik said.
“I have played Hong Kong, Australian Open, Davis Cup and Rotterdam, and all of them were quite successful for me except for the Davis Cup loss, but it still wasn’t demanding.”
He added that arriving shortly before the Rotterdam tournament and managing travel across continents tested his endurance. Despite that, Bublik was pleased with reaching the semifinal round, which exceeded his expectations under the circumstances. However, when he got to Doha for the Qatar Open, a tournament he considers one of his favorites, he felt unable to perform at his best.
“But for me, I think when I came to the Middle East, I came to Doha, one of my favourite tournaments alongside Dubai actually; it’s one of the few events that I nearly never skipped in my life, and I came, and I felt like I don’t want to come here and give a poor performance.”
He explained that prioritizing his health was paramount, especially if he was unable to compete with full effort. Bublik wanted to ensure his fans and ticket holders would witness his best level of play and experience a quality match. Consequently, he chose to withdraw and travel directly to Dubai, where he spent five days preparing for the upcoming competition.
I was relaxing, I was practicing and I was getting ready for Dubai.

Bublik’s Viewpoint on Players’ Role in Entertaining Spectators
Known for his unpredictable style and occasional humorous moments on court, Bublik was asked whether tennis players bear a responsibility to entertain fans during matches. He responded candidly that entertaining is not an obligatory part of their role, particularly in competitive events.
“No, we don’t. I don’t think it’s necessary to do it if you don’t want to,”
Bublik stated. He distinguished between exhibition matches, where players might incorporate entertaining elements as part of the event requirements, and official tournaments focused on winning points and titles.
“And if it’s not an exhibition event, when they ask you to do that, sometimes when you come, they say, hey, can you throw in a couple of under-arms serves and all that, then I guess you are part of your contract with an exhibition tournament. But I think here we all came to work, we all came to win matches, we all came to make points, titles and money.”
He concluded with a reminder to fans that players who do choose to entertain do so voluntarily and that expectations should be mindful accordingly.
So for me it’s not an obligation, but if you want to, if you feel like it, it’s great. If you don’t, I mean, don’t be upset if you bought a ticket.
