Alexander Zverev Reveals Why He Lost to Alcaraz at Australian Open

Alexander Zverev returns to ATP competition this week at the Mexican Open, nearly a month after narrowly missing out in the semifinals of the Australian Open. The German player faced Carlos Alcaraz in a grueling five-set battle at Melbourne Park, where he came exceedingly close to securing victory.

Zverev initially fell behind by two sets but managed to rally and push the match to a final fifth set. At 5-4, he even broke Alcaraz’s serve, coming within one game of reaching the final before ultimately falling short.

Insights Into Zverev’s Semifinal Loss Against Alcaraz

Despite the loss, Zverev offered a candid assessment of his performance during the demanding match. Speaking to Tennis TV, the 28-year-old explained,

“I felt like Australia, I played the right way,”

acknowledging that his approach was effective but fatigue played a crucial role in the outcome.

He added,

“I lost the match because I got tired in the end, to be very honest. I had nothing left at 5-4.”

Zverev described how exhaustion prevented him from moving quickly enough to make sharper shot selections during critical points. He noted that Alcaraz had some physical struggles in the first two sets, allowing Zverev to fight back, but eventually, Alcaraz recovered and closed out the victory.

Reflecting on the tournament as a whole, Zverev remained optimistic about his form, stating,

“It was a success in a way that, you know, I feel like my game was working, and the plan that we had for this year seems to be working. And yeah, I’m happy about that, and we continue doing the work.”

Next Challenge: Zverev’s Opening Match at the 2026 Mexican Open

Shifting focus from Melbourne, Zverev is set to compete at the Mexican Open, a tournament where he has enjoyed previous success. He won the Acapulco title in 2021 after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas, two years following a runner-up finish to Nick Kyrgios in 2019.

For the 2026 edition, Zverev will face Corentin Moutet in the opening round. He has met Moutet twice before, both meetings occurring last year, and won each time. Those victories took place in the round of 16 at the Stuttgart Open and the China Open in 2025, demonstrating Zverev’s consistent ability to overcome this particular opponent.

Significance of Zverev’s Australian Open Performance and Future Outlook

Zverev’s narrow semifinal defeat at the Australian Open highlights his persistence and competitive spirit at the highest levels of tennis. Taking Carlos Alcaraz, who later became the youngest man to complete a Career Grand Slam, to a five-set thriller underlines Zverev’s quality and resilience despite physical limits.

Looking ahead, his preparation for the Mexican Open carries significance as a step toward regaining top form and capturing additional titles. With a clear focus on maintaining his current level of play and adjusting as needed, Zverev aims to build on the progress signaled by his Australian Open run and continue his pursuit of Grand Slam success.
