Arthur Fils has withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championships shortly after a severe loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Qatar Open final. The French player, who returned this year from a prolonged injury break, was expected to face Jiri Lehecka but pulled out hours before their scheduled match due to a hip injury. This withdrawal comes just three days after the 21-year-old endured a lopsided 6-2, 6-1 defeat to the dominant world No. 1 in Doha.
Fils’ Recent Performance and Comeback Efforts
Having been sidelined for most of 2023 with a stress fracture that kept him out from May until February, Fils made a promising start to 2024. Before reaching the Qatar Open final, he had notable runs including a quarter-final appearance in Montpellier and a first-round exit at the Rotterdam Open. His return also featured a brief tournament outing at the Canadian Open last August, marking his steady progress back to form.
In Doha, Fils teamed up with new coach Goran Ivanisevic, whose guidance appeared to aid the young Frenchman’s quick resurgence. Despite the heavy defeat to Alcaraz in the final, Fils expressed mixed feelings but highlighted the positives from his performance so far this season.
Insights from Fils on Facing Alcaraz and Returning to Competition
Reflecting on the challenge posed by Alcaraz, Fils admitted the Spaniard’s superior level and tactical adaptability left him with no clear answers during their match. He described the experience as a necessary learning moment, despite the harsh scoreline.

“After a final against Alcaraz, when you come away from a match like that, you say you have to improve everything,”
the 21-year-old said in an interview with RMC Radio.
He added,
“I play good tennis, but at the level he plays, he is much stronger than us, in fact, especially compared to the players who are outside the top 10. He has an answer for everything I do. I got stuck, without any solutions, but it’s a good experience for a comeback, even if it was a bit rushed. It was great to play in a final, and I’ll keep it as a good experience.”
Fils also discussed the difficult road back from injury, which had kept him off the tour since Roland Garros last year.
“It feels good. Eight months is a long time. Since Roland Garros, we’ve had problems with the injury; it was a long time. I had to start over, stop; it was very long. It feels good to be back at this level. I’ve played better tennis in my life, but to return to the ATP 500 and reach a final so quickly is a pleasure. Frankly, I didn’t expect at all to reach a final and return to this level.”
Upcoming Plans and Coaching Developments
Fils traveled to Dubai hoping to compete, but after withdrawing, he was replaced by lucky loser Luca Nardi for the match against Lehecka. He was later seen supporting British No. 1 Jack Draper during Draper’s comeback match versus French qualifier Quentin Halys. Fils now looks ahead to the Indian Wells tournament, where he previously reached the quarter-finals in 2023.
On his coaching situation, Fils described a promising start to his partnership with Goran Ivanisevic, who joined him for his first tournament in Doha. Ivan Cinkus is expected to return to his coaching team during the Indian Wells event.
“Goran Ivanisevic joined me; this is his first tournament. Ivan Cinkus will return in Indian Wells. I got along well with Goran; he helped me a lot with his experience, even though it’s only been four or five days,”
Fils said.
Consequences and What Lies Ahead
Fils’ early exit from Dubai raises questions about his physical readiness amidst a packed season after a long injury spell. Facing such an intense defeat and then dealing with a hip issue underscores the challenges many players encounter when returning to top-level competition. His ongoing collaboration with Ivanisevic may be a crucial factor in rebuilding both his fitness and confidence.
Carlos Alcaraz’s dominant performance against Fils further cements his status as the leading player on the ATP Tour, showcasing a level of power and precision that younger competitors must strive to match. As Fils prepares for Indian Wells, the tennis community will watch closely to see if he can regain momentum and avoid further setbacks.
