Felix Auger-Aliassime Opens Up Ahead of Medvedev Dubai Clash

Felix Auger-Aliassime secured a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, showcasing his strong form on the ATP Tour. The Canadian has now won 11 of his last 12 matches as he gears up to meet Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal following Medvedev’s win over Jenson Brooksby.

This upcoming match is the pair’s 10th encounter, where Auger-Aliassime looks to build on recent progress against one of tennis’s toughest competitors.

Auger-Aliassime Reflects on the Challenge of Beating Medvedev

Felix Auger-Aliassime shared insights on the contrasting playing styles between him and Daniil Medvedev ahead of their semifinal clash.

Very different game styles, of course, it’s like two opposite styles battling tomorrow,

Auger-Aliassime said.

I try to come forward, he tries to make me miss, we’ll see who gets the better of the game plan.

Reflecting on their history, Auger-Aliassime noted how difficult Medvedev has been to overcome, requiring patience and perseverance over multiple matches.

He’s gotten the better of me; it took me seven, eight times to beat him,

he admitted.

He acknowledged their close contests and the respect he holds for Medvedev’s skill.

Hell of a player, one of the best of our generation, so always a lot of respect for his game.

Tracking the Head-to-Head Between Auger-Aliassime and Medvedev

Before his recent breakthroughs, Auger-Aliassime lost the first seven matches against Medvedev. He finally defeated the Russian at the 2024 Olympics, and later earned another win when Medvedev retired during their quarterfinal at the Qatar Open last year. Despite gaining momentum, Auger-Aliassime admits the challenge remains steep as they meet in Dubai on February 27, vying for a spot in the final.

Early Career Inspirations and Current Role Models for Auger-Aliassime

During an interview with Richard Connelly, Auger-Aliassime discussed the players he aspired to emulate when starting his professional career.

When I came on tour, obviously Novak [Djokovic] was dominating, he had been dominating the Grand Slams and everything on tour for the last 10 years or so,

he reflected.

Auger-Aliassime also highlighted the influence of Roger Federer on his playing style, while pointing out how difficult it is to replicate Federer’s unique approach to tennis.

But Roger, to see his progression as a player, to have studied him since I was a kid, it’s unbelievable, so that’s kind of the standards, when I came on tour, he was the guy.

He acknowledged the current generation’s rising stars and their impact on the sport.

Now we have the freak of Carlos Alcaraz, and obviously, Jannik Sinner is a great player,

Auger-Aliassime said.

So these guys are paving the way, but I’m right there, and I try to put up some great standards.

Serving Strength Shines in Dubai Quarterfinal Victory

Auger-Aliassime’s serving was a key factor in his quarterfinal win, where he delivered 16 aces against Jiri Lehecka, demonstrating excellent command on the court.

I think the serve was great,

he commented.

He detailed how changing conditions between sets required tactical adjustments, especially with wind and lighting.

We kind of played in two different conditions, from the first set to the second. The second, you know, full shade, the lights on, no wind.

The time of day we started, 4PM, there’s usually a bit of wind here in Dubai, so we had to find solutions, not aim for the perfect serve, or the perfect game.

I was able to mix up the speed, take some margin, make him miss, and it paid off in the first set, and I think the level was clinical for both of us on the serving.

In the second set it was tough to get breaking chances, and every time he came up with aces, it was kind of similar to the first-round match with [Zhang] Zhizhen, where you create chances, but you have to stay patient, because sometimes it’s just too good from your opponent.

What Awaits in the Dubai Championships Semifinal

With Felix Auger-Aliassime in strong form, the semifinal against Daniil Medvedev promises to be an intense display of contrasting tactics and skill. Auger-Aliassime’s recent improvements and resilience come against Medvedev’s proven consistency and competitive edge on the ATP Tour.

The outcome will determine who advances to the Dubai Tennis Championships final on February 27, potentially impacting the momentum of both players moving forward in the season.
