Estonia‘s leading male tennis players, Daniil Glinka and Mark Lajal, were registered to compete in the ATP Challenger 100 tournament held in Thionville, France. The event attracted attention as both players aimed to advance their rankings and gain momentum in the season.
Glinka Withdraws Mid-Match Against Local Opponent
During the opening round on Tuesday evening, Glinka encountered French player Hugo Gaston, ranked 96th globally. After losing the first set 6-3 and falling behind 4-2 in the second, Glinka chose to retire from the match rather than continue.
Lajal Pulls Out Before Tournament Begins Due to Health Issues
Mark Lajal, 22, who holds the 149th spot in the ATP rankings, withdrew from the tournament prior to its start. Lajal has experienced ongoing health problems this season, preventing him from competing at full strength. His coach, Karl Kiur Saar, explained the decision.
“Mark’s year has started in a complicated way and he hasn’t played a single tournament completely healthy yet. Considering that the season is long, it was sensible to withdraw and give the body some rest.”

Background on Recent Matches and Health Challenges
Previously, Glinka and Lajal faced off last month in another ATP Challenger tournament held in Pau, France, where Lajal retired in the second set due to health concerns, conceding the match to Glinka. Prior to that, Lajal had traveled from Namibia, where he represented Estonia in a Davis Cup tie.
What This Means for Estonia’s Tennis Prospects
The withdrawals of both Daniil Glinka and Mark Lajal from the Thionville event highlight the challenges they face managing health throughout a demanding season. While these setbacks may temporarily slow their progress, prioritizing recovery could allow them to return stronger for upcoming tournaments.
