Novak Djokovic Battles Arm Injury to Reach Indian Wells 4th Round

Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round of the Indian Wells tournament despite grappling with a persistent arm injury that continues to cause him discomfort. The experienced Serbian player revealed that serving seems to relieve his forearm pain, which fluctuates throughout matches, as he prepares to face defending champion Jack Draper in a challenging upcoming match.

Djokovic Overcomes Physical Struggles to Progress

In his third-round match, Djokovic displayed resilience after dropping the first set against Aleksandar Kovacevic, ultimately winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to move into the next stage of the competition. This marks his first time reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells since 2017. During the match, the 38-year-old wore a compression sleeve to support his right arm, an injury that has presented an unusual challenge for him.

In an interview with Tennis Channel, Djokovic described the nature of his forearm issue:

“I’ve been struggling the last couple of weeks with that forearm and trying to go through it. It’s a bit odd: The more I serve, the better I feel, but then it comes on and off if I get cold. If I don’t serve for five or six minutes, then I feel like the first couple of serves of that game are a bit painful. I’m working through it. It’s not something I haven’t faced before. It’s the ins and outs of being a tennis player at this level, but overall, the body is feeling okay. Hopefully, it’s going to get better every day.”

Despite this challenge, Djokovic remains one of the most successful players at Indian Wells, sharing the record for the most titles won at this event—five each with Roger Federer. However, his last title in California was secured back in 2016 when he defeated Milos Raonic. Since then, Djokovic has struggled to advance beyond the early rounds, marking a notable shift in his performance at this venue.

Upcoming Challenge: Defending Champion Jack Draper

Looking ahead, Djokovic is set to face Jack Draper, the tournament’s defending champion who impressively ousted Francisco Cerundolo in the previous round. Djokovic acknowledges the difficulty of the match and the rising challenge posed by the younger generation of tennis stars.

Reflecting on the upcoming contest, Djokovic said:

“It’s not going to get easier from here… Jack Draper is next, who is the defending champ and playing at a really high level again, but I love the challenge. That is one of the biggest reasons why I am still here and competing with these young guys. I want to see how they beat me — if they can — and that drives me every day to get better and prove to myself and others that I can still play at a high level.”

Draper, a Brit, made a breakthrough last year by defeating Holger Rune to claim his first major tournament title at Indian Wells. Although he lost the only match against Djokovic at the 2021 Wimbledon first round, Draper has since matured into a leading competitor on the ATP Tour, seen by many as a potential challenger to top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

After an injury that sidelined him following the 2025 US Open, Draper returned to competition at the Dubai Tennis Championships, reaching the round of 16 before falling to Arthur Rinderknech. His recent performances position him as one of the more formidable threats in the current tournament.

Comparing Recent Achievements of Djokovic and Draper

While Draper has already claimed the Indian Wells trophy and experienced some defeats last season, Djokovic has added two ATP 250 titles to his collection—the Geneva Open and the Hellenic Championship—solidifying his continued competitiveness despite physical setbacks. Djokovic last won a major gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics by defeating Alcaraz but has not captured a Big Title since that achievement.

Furthermore, Djokovic won his 40th Masters 1000 title at the 2023 Paris Masters but subsequently lost two Masters finals: the 2024 Shanghai Masters to Jannik Sinner and the 2025 Miami Open to Jakub Mensik. These recent results highlight both his enduring skill and the increasing challenge posed by younger players on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic’s Persistence Amid Physical Adversity

Although not currently at his peak health, Djokovic continues to fight through struggles with his forearm injury to maintain his place among tennis’s elite. His ability to compete at a high level despite these setbacks reflects his determination and experience spanning nearly two decades at the top of the sport.

In the words of José Morón, a tennis commentator on Twitter:

“Este es Novak Djokovic en este Indian Wells. No en su mejor estado, sufriendo de problemas y soportando el dolor, pero tirando para adelante. Siempre me asombraré de cómo Nole es capaz de jugar frente a la adversidad y pese a todos los problemas que pueda tener ya a sus casi 39…”

As Djokovic prepares for his next match against Draper, his focus remains on managing his physical condition and mental toughness. The evolving competition from younger players like Draper, Sinner, and Alcaraz signals a new era in men’s tennis, but Djokovic’s presence demonstrates that experience and resilience still hold significant value in the sport.
