City of Terrace Opens New Pickleball Courts: The City of Terrace held a neighborhood event yesterday evening to celebrate the soft opening of new pickleball courts near Skeena View Park, behind the Heritage Park Museum. The courts were created in response to growing local interest in pickleball and took several months to complete.
Growing Demand Sparks New Pickleball Courts
Terrace’s Parks and Recreation Director, Tara Irwin, said the idea started in 2023 when the local Pickleball Club asked the city for more courts. After about a year of planning, the city decided to convert one tennis court into six pickleball courts.
“The City of Terrace was approached originally in 2023 by the Pickleball Club, expressing a need for additional Pickleball Courts as the Sport has been rapidly growing in our Community and so we did look into this project for about a year before we decided to convert one of the Tennis courts into six Pickleball Courts.” – (Tara Irwin)
Court Renovation and Event Details
The conversion project lasted about six months through summer 2024. Most of the work was done by the city’s maintenance crew, with fencing contracted out. The process included sealing cracks, applying special paint, and marking lines on the courts.
“We did the project primarily In-House so it was our maintenance crew that led the project but we did contract out the fencing but it involved sealing a lot of the cracks that were existing in the courts and then ordering the very specialized paint and painting the courts and then painting the lines, all of that work was done by our maintenance staff.” – (Tara Irwin)
“we were battling with some of the weather because it has to be a very particular temperature in order to paint with the specialized paint that we had to use so either too hot or raining or too cold but it was a great project, a lot of different people involved in the planning and implementation.” – (Tara Irwin)
Community Excitement and Support
The event attracted a good number of people who enjoyed trying the new courts and sharing food. Terrace Mayor Sean Bujtas also showed interest in pickleball.
“I’m not gonna try it out today cause I got to get down to the Soccer field and coach some Soccer but I think I need to get out here soon and try out Pickelball cause it sure does seem like fun and it seems great, there’s all ages playing Pickleball so it looks like a wonderful sport.” – (Sean Bujtas)
The new courts reflect the fast growth of pickleball in Terrace and provide a space for residents of all ages to enjoy the sport. The city’s hands-on approach and community support may encourage more events and programs in the future.
