Pickleball Yorkton Youth Camp Surge: Pickleball Yorkton hosted a three-day youth camp this week that drew 19 eager participants between the ages of 10 and 14. The event, called the “Little Picklers” program, took place in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and aimed to introduce young players to the growing sport. According to Pickleball Yorkton president Gina Resler, the camp was overbooked due to unexpectedly high demand.
“The response was crazy,” offered Pickleball Yorkton president Gina Resler. “We actually over booked because of the demand.”
Growing Youth Interest in Pickleball
Resler admitted she didn’t expect the level of interest in the camp.
“Yes I was surprised,” said Resler.
However, she noted that kids in Yorkton are becoming more familiar with pickleball since it is now part of their physical education classes at school.
The camp focused on basic skills and gave the children a first look at how to play the sport.
“It was similar to our learn to play programs,” said Resler.
New Courts and Expanding Facilities
Pickleball Yorkton continues to grow, with a new set of outdoor courts being installed this summer at Heritage Heights. During the warmer months, club members meet every Thursday evening at Knights of Columbus Park. In winter, they move their games indoors to the Gloria Hayden Centre.
Sometimes, the club also hosts tournaments at the Flexihall at the Gallagher Centre. Morning playing sessions are also held when the facility is available.
Still, indoor space is limited.
“Indoors we’re fighting for space,” she said with the 200 active club members always looking for more court time.
Looking Ahead to Youth Tournaments
With growing interest from kids, Pickleball Yorkton is now considering ways to expand its youth offerings. One future goal is to hold a youth-only tournament, giving young players a chance to compete and grow their skills even further.
