Saint-Félicien Pickleball Courts: The city of Saint-Félicien is transforming an old skatepark into six new pickleball courts and one basketball court. The construction, which began earlier this summer near the track and field area off Sports Street, is part of a larger plan to improve local sports facilities.
City crews are working quickly, and while no exact completion date is set, the goal is to open the courts either this fall or by summer 2025. Jeremie Bonneau, from the city’s leisure services, shared that the high demand for pickleball inspired the project.
Upgrading an Old Space
The new courts are being built where an old skatepark once stood. The site was chosen because it was already a popular area for sports and gatherings. The goal is to create a fun and safe place for all ages to stay active and meet new people.
Jeremie Bonneau explained, “The skyrocketing demand for pickleball” helped push the project forward. As the courts near completion, many in the community are eager to start playing.
Part of a Larger Plan
The pickleball and basketball courts are just one part of a bigger effort to improve Saint-Félicien’s parks and sports areas. The city is also fixing up its tennis courts and adding new water play zones.
Work on the baseball field is almost done. The only part left to finish is the shelter for scorekeepers. Jeremie Bonneau confirmed, “The baseball project is in the final inning.”
Pickleball’s Growing Popularity
Pickleball started in 1965 near Seattle. It mixes tennis, badminton, and table tennis. In Quebec, the game began growing in the early 2000s. Now, there are around 15,000 players in the federation and many more who play casually.
Even tennis player Eugenie Bouchard has shown her support for pickleball. The sport is easy to learn, fun for all ages, and growing fast across the world.
