World Pickleball League Discloses New Rules: The World Pickleball League (WPBL) is transforming the game with innovative rules to create faster-paced matches. These changes aim to enhance the spectator experience online and in the stadium. The league, co-founded by former Indian tennis players Gaurav Natekar and Arati Ponnappa Natekar, is implementing these rules for the first time.
Timed Matches for Thrilling Action
To keep the game moving, the WPBL has introduced a timed format for its matches. Each game lasts 15 minutes, and players have only 10 seconds between points.
This structure promotes continuous action and eliminates any chance of time-wasting during matches. Each tie consists of five matches across various categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Tactical Changes with PicklePlay
Another key innovation is the introduction of PicklePlay, a strategic element that allows coaches to substitute one player for another for five serves.
This option can be utilized anytime after the first five minutes of the match, with each player eligible for only one PicklePlay per tie. This addition aims to challenge players’ adaptability within the fast-paced format.
Tiebreaker and Scoring System
While the WPBL maintains traditional pickleball scoring—where points can only be won on the serve—there are changes for tie situations. If a match ends in a tie, a tiebreaker will use rally scoring, with the first player or team to reach seven points declared the winner.
To further incentivize performance, teams will earn:
- 3 points for every match won outright.
- 2 points for a match won via tiebreaker. The team winning the most matches in a tie will be declared the overall winner.
