Nolan Siegel Ends Contract Drama with Arrow McLaren Crew

Nolan Siegel has put an end to speculation about his contract status with Arrow McLaren as the 2026 IndyCar season approaches. The 21-year-old American driver’s future with the team became uncertain in late 2025 following public comments from Arrow McLaren’s team principal, Tony Kanaan, who issued an ultimatum regarding Siegel’s performance expectations.

Kanaan, who was instrumental in securing Siegel’s position by convincing McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and then-principal Gavin Ward to bring him on board in mid-2024, expressed frustration with Siegel’s results. Compared to teammates Pato O’Ward and Christian Lundgaard, who together earned 12 podiums in 2025, Siegel posted only two Top 10 finishes. This gap raised doubts about his continuation with the team.

Team Principal’s Performance Deadline and Siegel’s Response

In December 2025, Tony Kanaan stated his need for Siegel to achieve a Top 10 finish in the overall championship for the 2026 season, saying,

“if not, I don’t think I can keep him.”

Siegel responded in January during IndyCar’s official content days, indicating he was not overly troubled by these remarks and remained eager to work alongside Kanaan again in 2026.

Following the Unser INDYCAR Open Test held over two days this week, reporters asked Siegel whether Kanaan’s ultimatum weighed on his mind. The No. 6 Chevrolet driver dismissed the off-track drama, stating,

“I mean, I think honestly, people have made a really big deal about all of that, and I don’t think internally with me or Tony or any — it’s really not that big a deal for us. Nothing has changed. We still have a good relationship. I’m very comfortable. It’s been nice to run with the group that TK has helped put together on the 6 car. I think there’s some really good additions. He’s done a great job with that. Everything is good.”

Siegel also praised the experienced pit wall team supporting him, adding,

“I think honestly, for me, I would say I’m at this point more comfortable and more confident with the group we have than I expected to be. It feels like a group that’s worked together for a long time. Yeah, I would say the comfort level is very high, and everyone is happy. Everyone is optimistic.”

He further commented,

“I think there’s been some kind of drama created around all of that in the off-season that didn’t actually exist for us. It was just like kind of people spooling each other up. We’re chilling over here. We’re doing well,”

reflecting a calm and united front within the team.

Offseason Experience in Asian Le Mans Series Boosts Siegel’s Preparedness

To maintain sharpness over the offseason, Siegel competed with Inter Europol Competition’s LMP2 team in the 2025/26 Asian Le Mans Series. His campaign culminated in a podium finish at the second race in Abu Dhabi. The additional race experience proved critical, especially given the limited IndyCar preseason testing schedule.

Siegel explained the advantage of this extra racing, particularly in comparison to 2025 when the preseason run was shorter and he felt less race-ready heading into the year. He described the benefit, stating,

“Yeah, I think it (Asian Le Mans) was super helpful. Last year obviously we didn’t have this (Phoenix) test, either, so it was just Sebring, and I hadn’t driven a race car for a long time. So you get in and it’s — I felt a little bit more rusty kind of than I would have liked. And I think a lot of people have that experience where you jump in and it takes a few runs to get comfortable, whereas this year it was just in and it felt normal right away.”

This experience helped Siegel smoothly transition into the 2026 IndyCar season, instilling confidence ahead of what is expected to be a critical year in his career.

Siegel Faces Pressure to Deliver Consistent Top Results in Final Contract Year

Reports indicate that 2026 is the final year of Siegel’s contract with Arrow McLaren. The team expects him to deliver stronger performances throughout the 18-race IndyCar season, targeting consistent finishes within the Top 5 and ideally podium appearances to secure his future with the squad. His ability to meet these demands will be closely watched by team management and fans alike.

With the backing of experienced leadership from Tony Kanaan and a solid team around him, Siegel is positioned to prove his value and silence critics who doubted his potential after a challenging previous season.
