The Toronto Blue Jays initially hoped to retain star infielder Bo Bichette by convincing him to accept a short-term contract. However, recent developments suggest that Philadelphia Phillies have positioned themselves as frontrunners, reportedly preparing to offer Bichette a long-term deal that the Blue Jays are unwilling to match.
The Phillies conducted meetings with Bichette this week, and multiple sources indicate that they are expected to present the highest offer within the coming days. This approach contrasts with Toronto’s limited willingness to commit to a lengthy contract.
Details on Contract Strategies and Payroll Flexibility
ESPN’s Jeff Passan shared on Sportsnet his expectation that the Phillies will outbid others for Bichette. Meanwhile, reports from The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon revealed that Toronto’s proposal centered around a one-year contract to bring Bichette back, a scenario that appears increasingly unlikely to succeed.
The Jays will likely stay in touch with Bichette’s representatives as free agency remains fluid and plans evolve,
Bannon wrote.
Perhaps if Bichette elects to take a shorter deal with opt-outs, similar to the contracts signed by Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso, and Cody Bellinger in recent offseasons, the Jays could make things work for a year.
Regarding the Phillies’ financial capacity, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki explained that Philadelphia could free up nearly $25 million by signing J.T. Realmuto within the $13-15 million range and trading third baseman Alec Bohm. This maneuver would allow enough payroll flexibility to pursue Bichette, but only with a long-term contract, which the Blue Jays have declined.

Bichette likely would cost more than that,
Zolecki noted.
But the Phillies could make the money more palatable by giving him a longer-term deal to spread out the average annual value, which affects the luxury tax. They are probably open to that because of Bichette’s age.
Toronto Begins Pursuit of Alternative Targets Amid Bichette Departure
Accepting the likelihood of losing Bichette, the Blue Jays have reportedly shifted their focus toward acquiring outfielder Kyle Tucker, a bigger prize in free agency. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale acknowledged this change in direction.
I think they’ve already made their choice. They want Tucker,
Nightengale said.
Kyle Tucker faces stiff competition, as the New York Mets are said to have offered him a lucrative four-year deal averaging $50 million per season. This bid comes as the Mets seek to soften the blow of losing Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles.
Despite the impressive offer, Tucker’s market appears to have softened compared to initial expectations. Passan observed on Sportsnet that the previous high valuations have tempered, creating uncertainty around his final contract terms.
The market might be almost working backward at this point where it started off high, that was the expectation, that was the hope, didn’t materialize quite like he liked,
Passan said.
Now, he’s going to go back down, get that AAV juiced up, get guys interested and then suddenly all bets are off.
According to Passan, several teams are reluctant to commit large sums immediately, anticipating a stronger free agent class arriving in 2028, which further complicates current negotiations.
Implications of Bo Bichette’s Potential Departure for Toronto
The evolving situation marks a significant setback for the Blue Jays’ roster strategy, as losing Bichette would leave a void in their infield. The Phillies’ willingness to offer a long-term commitment underscores Toronto’s challenges in retaining premier talent under current constraints.
While Toronto shifts its attention to other available stars like Tucker, the competition for elite free agents remains fierce and fluid. This dynamic reflects broader tension and uncertainty within the league, as teams balance financial considerations with the desire to build competitive rosters.
How these developments unfold will shape both the Blue Jays’ trajectory and the balance of power in Major League Baseball in the near future.

The Mets, according to a source, have a four-year offer on the table for Kyle Tucker. @JimDuquetteGM first suggested yesterday the Mets had possibly offered that length.
