Michael Lorenzen Joins Rockies in Surprising One-Year Deal

The Colorado Rockies announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen to a one-year contract on Thursday, which also includes a club option for the 2027 season. Lorenzen, who recently turned 34, is guaranteed $8 million for the 2026 season, with the option year valued at $9 million, according to an MLB.com report. This acquisition was accompanied by the designation of right-hander Bradley Blalock for assignment by the Rockies.

Background and Recent Performance of Michael Lorenzen

Last season, Lorenzen played for the Kansas City Royals, recording a 7-11 win-loss mark with a 4.64 ERA across 27 games, 26 of which he started. He struck out 127 batters in 141 2/3 innings but also led major league pitchers with 12 wild pitches. Drafted 38th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2013 MLB Draft out of Cal State Fullerton, Lorenzen spent the first seven years of his major league career with the Reds before moving through several teams over recent seasons.

Michael Lorenzen’s Career Trajectory and Achievements

Following his time with the Reds from 2015 to 2021, Lorenzen joined the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, then moved to the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies during 2023, and spent parts of 2024 with the Texas Rangers and the Royals. Despite the frequent team changes, Lorenzen was selected as an All-Star in 2023. Over 395 major league games, including 119 starts, he holds a career record of 54-55 with 15 saves, a 4.08 ERA, and 826 strikeouts spanning 996 innings. In postseason appearances, all as a reliever, Lorenzen has pitched 7 2/3 innings over six games with a 1.17 ERA.

Bradley Blalock Designated for Assignment

In a corresponding roster move, the Rockies designated 25-year-old Bradley Blalock for assignment. Blalock struggled last season, posting a 2-6 record with a 9.36 ERA in 14 games (12 starts). Over his brief major league career, including time with the Milwaukee Brewers and the Rockies, he has totaled a 3-9 record with an 8.16 ERA across 21 games, 18 of which were starts.

The Significance of Lorenzen’s Signing for the Rockies

By acquiring Michael Lorenzen, the Rockies add experienced pitching depth with a player who has demonstrated versatility as both a starter and reliever. Lorenzen’s ability to contribute in multiple roles could prove valuable during the upcoming seasons, especially given his history of steady strikeout numbers and postseason experience. With his signing, the Rockies appear to prioritize veteran presence in their pitching staff as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
