Yu Darvish, the San Diego Padres’ leading pitcher, remains sidelined for the entire 2026 season due to recovery from left elbow surgery, casting uncertainty on his future career. Despite circulating reports about his impending retirement, Darvish has yet to make a conclusive decision regarding his MLB tenure.
Current Status of Yu Darvish’s Career and Injury
Darvish, who joined Major League Baseball in 2012 and has since achieved five All-Star selections along with multiple Cy Young Award finalist honors, struggled during the 2025 season with a 5.38 ERA over 15 starts and a 5-5 record. His ongoing rehabilitation from a repaired left elbow means he will miss the entire 2026 campaign as he focuses on recovery.
Recently, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Darvish planned to retire despite having three years and $43 million left on his contract. However, this claim was swiftly countered by Darvish’s agent, Joel Wolfe, who emphasized that no final resolution has been reached.
“Yu has not made a final decision yet. This is a complicated matter we are still working through,”
Wolfe stated.
Darvish Addresses the Retirement Speculation Directly
On Saturday, Yu Darvish shared his perspective to bring clarity to the ongoing speculation. While he acknowledged contemplating the possibility of voiding his contract, he stressed that no retirement announcement has been made and that discussions remain active.
“You may have seen an article, and although I am leaning towards voiding the contract, there’s still a lot that has to be talked over with the Padres so the finer details are yet to be decided,”
Darvish wrote on X.

“Also I will not be announcing my retirement yet. Right now I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete. If once I get to that point I feel I can’t do that, I will announce my retirement.”
Darvish further elaborated that throughout the offseason, he has been in discussions with the Padres about the potential termination of his contract but has maintained a consistent stance on waiting before arriving at a conclusive decision. He plans to continue rehab at Petco Park and attend portions of Spring Training in hopes of returning to competition.
“Since there are reports about my retirement, I’ll explain briefly,”
Darvish added.
“I’ve been discussing with the Padres since last year about terminating the contract, but I haven’t decided to retire yet. My own intention has been consistent since the start of the offseason, but at this point, discussions with the Padres, the players’ association, and my agent haven’t been finalized.”
“As for me, if I can thoroughly complete my rehab and feel confident that I can pitch in games both mentally and physically, I’d like to start over and compete from scratch again. As for this year, I plan to go to Petco Park for rehab as well, and also attend a bit of Spring Training.”
Uncertain Outlook for the 39-Year-Old Pitcher’s Future
At 39, Yu Darvish faces a critical juncture in his career as he weighs his physical recovery against the demands of competing at a high level. His decision will have considerable implications for the Padres as well as the broader MLB pitching landscape, where veteran arms with proven track records are increasingly rare.
Darvish’s ability to return to form after such a serious surgery remains to be seen, with his rehabilitation progress at Petco Park expected to offer clearer signs in the upcoming months. The baseball community watches closely as negotiations continue among Darvish, his representatives, and the Padres, while fans and analysts await confirmation on whether this iconic pitcher will take the mound again or close the chapter on a significant MLB career.
