Puerto Rico’s National Team will feature reliever Edwin “Sugar” Díaz and outfielder Heliot Ramos in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation confirmed earlier this week. Both athletes are set to be part of the final team roster submitted to Major League Baseball on Tuesday, aiming to showcase Puerto Rico’s talent on home soil.
Díaz Looks to Lead the Team as Closer After Overcoming Injury
Edwin “Sugar” Díaz, known as one of the most formidable closers in Major League Baseball over the last decade, will participate in the WBC for the third time with Puerto Rico. The 31-year-old pitcher, born in Naguabo, suffered a significant injury during the 2023 tournament when he tore his right patellar tendon in celebration after Puerto Rico clinched a quarterfinal spot by defeating the Dominican Republic. This injury sidelined him for the entire subsequent MLB season.
Following his recovery, Díaz, who became a free agent after last season, signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning two-time World Series champions. Díaz expressed his pride and excitement to represent Puerto Rico again, stating,
“There are no words that can express the feeling of pride and at the same time humility of knowing that I can represent Puerto Rico in the Classic, at home, in my country.”
He added,
“To hear the trumpets playing in Puerto Rico with my people and my family. Grateful and excited about such a dream come true.”
Heliot Ramos Narrowing in on First International Tournament
Ramos, a 26-year-old outfielder from Humacao, will make his World Baseball Classic debut after proving himself in the San Francisco Giants organization and gaining valuable experience in Major League Baseball. Ramos shared his eagerness to compete, saying,

“It is an honor for me to represent my island at home,”
and added,
“I am ready to compete and go out there to win every game.”
Additional Notable Players Confirmed for Team Puerto Rico
Besides Díaz and Ramos, other major league veterans named to the roster include third baseman Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals and utility player Willi Castro of the Colorado Rockies, who hails from Río Piedras. These players are expected to strengthen Puerto Rico’s lineup in their quest for WBC success.
Insurance Concerns Threaten Player Participation
Puerto Rico’s role in the 2026 Classic faced uncertainty as Major League Baseball’s insurer declined coverage for at least eight national team members, including stars Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa. Some insurance issues were still under review as of Tuesday, leaving the availability of these key players in question.
Puerto Rico’s Ambitions in the 2026 World Baseball Classic
With a roster blending seasoned veterans and emerging stars like Díaz and Ramos, Puerto Rico aims to build on its previous tournament success. The team’s participation holds deep cultural significance, especially playing at home, and fans hope this motivated squad can contend strongly. The resolution of insurance matters will be crucial in determining the full strength of the team as it prepares for the international challenge ahead.
