Eugenio Suárez Returns to Reds in Stunning $15M Homecoming Deal

The Cincinnati Reds have secured the return of Eugenio Suárez with a one-year, $15 million contract, including a mutual option for 2027, bringing back the veteran third baseman to the team where he made his biggest mark. This reunion restores a vital power element to the Reds’ roster ahead of the 2026 season.

Suárez, 34, previously played seven seasons in Cincinnati from 2015 to 2021, hitting 189 home runs during that span and reaching a career peak with 49 homers in 2019. After leaving in 2022, the Reds entered a rebuilding phase that saw them lack a consistent home run threat in their lineup.

Recent Performance Highlights Strengthen Reds’ Interest

During the 2025 season with Arizona and Seattle, Suárez matched his personal best by launching 49 home runs while driving in 118 runs. Though his batting average was .228, his .824 on-base plus slugging (OPS) underscored the substantial power that attracted Cincinnati’s front office.

“He’s a great clubhouse guy, a great guy with all of your fans. You know what you’re getting with him,” said Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall. “He’s just a tremendous individual and it’s something we weren’t sure we would be able to do, but it was great that we were able to get Geno.”

Strong Personal Ties Influence Suárez’s Decision to Return

More than just boosting the lineup’s firepower, Suárez’s decision to come back to Cincinnati was driven by deep personal connections. His daughter was born in Cincinnati, and part of his family continues to reside in the city. While he considered similar offers, including from Pittsburgh, the emotional bond with Cincinnati was decisive.

The Reds’ power deficit was pronounced after managing just 167 home runs during the 2025 season, emphasizing the need for a proven slugger.

“When you put everything together, it made it easy for me to be back home,” Suárez said. “The chance to win, the chance to bring the playoffs to the city and the chance we have with me of making the playoffs and winning it all, it was high.”

Despite nearing their payroll limit after trading Gavin Lux earlier in the offseason, Cincinnati’s ownership approved exceeding the budget to sign Suárez, recognizing how his power and experience could bolster a team fresh off a playoff appearance.

Addressing Power Shortage and Veteran Leadership in Cincinnati’s Lineup

The Reds struggled offensively at times during their 83-79 record last season, ranking 21st in home runs with only 167. Their leader, Elly De La Cruz, hit 22 homers but managed just four after the All-Star break. Suárez’s addition aims to protect young hitters like De La Cruz by providing consistent power and veteran presence.

Suárez’s Role and Roster Implications for the Upcoming Season

With Ke’Bryan Hayes firmly established at third base, Suárez is expected to primarily fill the designated hitter role, occasionally sliding over to first base. This setup introduces competitive dynamics for playing time involving Spencer Steer and top prospect Sal Stewart, who will vie for multiple positions on the roster.

Since Suárez’s departure, the Reds have not featured a player reaching 30 home runs, despite playing at the hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. His return addresses this glaring void and adds leadership to a young core aiming to build on their playoff momentum from 2025.

Emotional Significance of Suárez’s Return and Career Reflection

Originally acquired from Detroit in 2014, Suárez transformed from a utility player into an All-Star at third base starting in 2016. His exit during Cincinnati’s 2022 rebuild was sentimental, making this comeback particularly meaningful on a personal level.

“I remember that conversation with you guys when I said, ‘You never know,’” Suárez recalled. “In a business like that, you never know where you’ll end your career. I said at the time, ‘Maybe I’ll end my career in Cincinnati.’ And five years later, here I am. God’s timing is perfect.”

Implications for Cincinnati’s Competitive Outlook in 2026 and Beyond

Signing Suárez signals the Reds’ clear intent to contend in 2026 while preserving long-term financial flexibility. Backed by a youthful core led by Elly De La Cruz and promising prospects across the system, adding the veteran slugger’s power and experience could ignite sustained success in a competitive National League Central division.
