José Urquidy Joins Pirates on $1.5M One-Year Deal

Pitcher José Urquidy agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, according to a source familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The deal is contingent on Urquidy passing a physical examination.

Role and Team Fit for Urquidy

The 30-year-old right-hander brings additional depth to the Pirates’ pitching staff, which includes National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes. His ability to be optioned to the minor leagues offers the Pirates flexibility as they shape their roster for the upcoming season.

Career Background and Recent Health

Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery on June 5, 2024, while with Houston. Last March, he signed a $1 million, one-year deal with Detroit and returned to the major leagues on September 14, 2024. In two relief appearances last season, he posted a 7.71 ERA across 2 1/3 innings.

A veteran of six major league seasons, Urquidy’s record includes 27 wins and 16 losses with a 4.00 ERA across 70 starts and 11 relief outings for the Astros and Tigers from 2019 to 2023. Prior to surgery, he spent time on the injured list due to a forearm strain this year.

Postseason Experience and Career Impact

Urquidy has also contributed in postseason play, holding a 4.08 ERA in 15 appearances, including eight starts. His experience and recent recovery could prove valuable to the Pirates as they seek to strengthen their pitching options for future campaigns.
