Marcell Ozuna Joins Pirates in $12M One-Year Deal

Marcell Ozuna‘s tenure with the Atlanta Braves has ended as he agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network. This move brings veteran power to the Pirates’ lineup as they aim to improve offensive output alongside their pitching staff, which features 2025 NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes.

Ozuna’s Role and Impact on the Pirates’ Roster

The Pirates plan to use Ozuna primarily as their designated hitter, expecting his experience and power to boost the team offensively. His addition is part of a broader effort to strengthen the lineup, which includes recent acquisitions like Ryan O’Hearn, Brandon Lowe, Jhostynxon García, Mason Montgomery, and Gregory Soto. Ozuna’s presence could be valuable as the Pirates strive for more competitive performances in the coming seasons.

Currently, the Pirates’ payroll was just below $110 million, but Ozuna’s contract will increase that total to roughly $122 million, moving the team past the Colorado Rockies to 22nd in MLB payroll rankings.

Reviewing Ozuna’s Recent Performance and Braves History

At 35 years old, Ozuna’s 2025 season marked a downturn compared to his recent peak years. He batted .232 with 21 home runs, 68 RBIs, and a .756 OPS, which contrasts with his strong performances in 2023 and 2024 when he hit near 40 homers each year with over 100 RBIs and OPS above .900. Over six seasons with the Braves, Ozuna contributed to five playoff appearances, though the team has not advanced past a postseason series since their 2021 World Series win.

Despite speculation about a possible midseason trade during Atlanta’s disappointing 2025 campaign, Ozuna’s contract veto rights prevented a deal. Consequently, the Braves lost him as a free agent this offseason.

Pirates’ Strategy and Future Outlook with Ozuna

The Pirates have actively pursued power hitters this offseason, initially showing interest in Kyle Schwarber before he re-signed with Philadelphia. With Ozuna now on board, Pittsburgh hopes for a rebound in his performance to aid the team’s progression. This acquisition reflects the club’s commitment to improving their offense while building around promising talents like Paul Skenes.
